SAMUEL GOLDWYN GARY COOPER MERLE OBERON.
MANILA, April 12—(UP) American troops raced 14 mile; through disorganized Japanese defense's tei secuie a second fe>ot hold on the eastern coast of Luzon teielay. The new anchor, in the Mauban area 55 miles southeast oi Manila, was established by elements of the First Cavalry Division which has been clewing the Luzon sector east of Laguna Cay. Pushing out from ncwly-cap-tured Lucban, the First Cavalry l’oops swept northeast alemg a gravel highway through the own of Sampuloc and reached Mauban on the coast. 12 miles north of 11th Airborne Division units at Antimonan. A communique discloseel that I the main forces of the 11th Diviion had moved into Antimonan to thoroughly consolidate the positions in the town seized two 'ays ago by advance units. The parallel drives by the caviry and airborne troops effectively sealed off the Japanese forces in the Bicol peninsula, in jutheastem Luzon alreaely under attack from the south by I he 158th Regimental Combat Team, and secured all the road networks in southern Tuyabaa [irovince. In central Luzon, Sixth Divion troops finally cleared Mount Mataba, and two adjoining (leaks, approximately 15 miles northeast of Manila, and con,,nued to push northeastward nto the upper watershed region.

Lud Denny may not be much of a farmer, but most folks allow he’s pretty smart at solving other people’s problems. Like Alvin Blake’s locusts. For years Alvin has hern trying to get rid of a grove of locusts. They aren’t using up any good land, but they annoy Alvin. Every time he cats them down, up they shoot again. “What’ll I do about them locusts?” Alvin asks Lud. “Well, if you can’t get rid of ’em,” says Lud, “ I’d say you better get to like ’em.” .Marllia Itidpaih ^ P. T. A. .Meeting The last meeting of the s.hool year of the Martha J. Ridpath, Parent Teachers Association, was opened by the pledge to the Bag and tjic P. T. A. song. The devotions, Luke 10; 25-38, wer read by a sixth grade girl.

From where I sit, that’s sound philosophy-applied to people just as much as locust trees. You can’t always change folks to your way of thinking—some may prefer beer to buttermilk, or a double harness to a single one—but you can get to like them (if you take the trouble). And first thing you know, the little diilerences don’t matter. S'
