CHI IU II FORUM What has the East to give the 'est? We Americans need to cognize the fact that the East m give us deep knowledge of >w people can live together in ippiness and with mutual relect, the Chinese philosophy of !asonableness so practically apied by China’s people of all {es, and the value of the indivlual human bpirit which has pen its fruit; the deep belief in Ian’s relation to God and eter|ty, that belief in which the aple of India live and move nd have their being, and the able patience which has been fruit of it; the loyalty and Igh sense of duty which the topic of Japan have developed pen When the obpect of that lyalty has been unworthy; the >nviction of the equality of all ices upon which Russia alone it of all the people’s has foundher new nation.—Pearl Buck They Work for Tomorrow.

HOME EDUCATION Suppressing Personality

The story is told of a girl, named Martha, who seemed to be a dull pupil; her teacher had her examined by a psychiatrist who insisted that her mind was normal. A study of her life was inade; here was found the cause of her trouble. The parents were disappointed that their first born was a girl so that when the second child, a boy. came into the home he received undue attention. The parents’ attitude toward Martha was disparaging. Often the mother would say to visitors, “Harry is a bright child, but Martha is only ordinary. Harry has to help her with her lessons, a task which he does remarkably well.” Or when any me suggested that Martha run an errand or assume a responsibility, the mother would exclaim, | “Let me get Harry for you; Martha could not possibly do it.”
