Walton Stars As Tigers Win Net Opener, 45 to 39

Sparked by Bill Walton, Navy V-12 trainee from Mt, Vernon, Indiana, DePauw opened its 19-44-45 basketball season Wednesday night in Bowman gym with a 45 to 39 victory over a tough and aggressive Central Normal team from Danville.

Walton, guard, who wore a number 6 on his jersey , was easily the outstanding player on the floor. He led the Old Gold offensive with 15 points and was right in there on defense.

The Tigers started strong, running the count to 19-5. Coach Lloyd Messersmith then began substituting and DePauw apparently forgot how to score. In the meantime, the Normal netters found the range and agitated the draperies to run up behind the Methodists, 21-20 at

the rest intermission.

Messersmith put his starting five of London, Gardner, Long- , i. fellow, Mumford and Walton ' back in the encounter as the i second half got underway. De- ! Pauw missed numerous shots and Central Normal .forged into the 27-26 lead. Komiss, a substitute, was injected Into the fray and gave the Tigers new life with a free toss and a fi<-v goal. From then on the local collegians began to pick up steam and were soon six to eight points ahead of their opponents

from Danville.

With the scoreboard reading I 44 to 39, London was fouled go-! ing under the hoop as the final I gun exploded He made one of, two free attempts from the) charity stripe and the ball game) ended 45 to 39 in favor of th.»\ Tigers. J For Central Normal, Gibbs, j No. 9, was the bright light,

chalking up 16 points.
