WIT AND WISDOM A Soft Answer A sergeant in Egypt tells this in cident about himself: “There was a private in the same company who was converted in Malta before the regiment came to Egypt. We gave that fellow an awful time. One terribly wet night he came in very tired and very wet. Before gettihg into bed he got down to pray. My boots were heavy with wet mud. and I let him have one on one side of the head, and the other on the other side; and he just went on with his prayers. Next morning I found these boots beautifully polished and standing by the side of my bed. That was his reply to me, and it broke my heart. I was saved that day."

PUTNAMVILLE CHURCH

All members of the Ladies Aid and Home Economics Club of Warren ( township and members of the Polly 1 Anna Sunday School Class and all those interested in the Putnamvillj . M. . Church are Invited to a special ' service at the church Sunday evenng at 7:30 o’clock. A home talent

CATHOLIC INFORMATION Don’t eat that—it’s poisoned! "Now, children, be good while Mother's out. Don't play with the matches! Don't lean out the window! Don’t eat that cake in the pantry— it's poisoned for rats!” What a lot of commands! What restrictions on the children's freedom! But who can quest • n that a mother has both the right and the duty o so

command ?

Ever since Christ said to Peter: “Feed my lambs. Feed my sheet)," Holy Mother the Church has exercised the right and duty to feed her children God's spiritual food and to protect them from pusons, skillfully conco.ted to ruin the faith and morals of the unwary. It is for th.s reason tiiat the Chuieh has its Index of Forbidden Books. The Index is widely misunderstood. It does not list by title and name all books and authors forbidden to the Catholic. In fact th s,» so listed ars comparatively few and consist largely of works about whose character there was a doubt and upon which the" fori the Church had to make

publ e -decision.

The application to the great mass of at:.oik's is in the <;,-nernl Rules of the Index, whieh plainly show the | t' pe of character of work, the read- ; ig of which is dangi rous to faith j and morals and thcivfore forbidden I inder pain of grievous an. If bolts of such a character are not known to the individual by i.-putation, they soon make themselves nunifest in the reading and the loyal Catholic immediately closes and destroys such

a book.

The General Rules of the Index closely parallel God's natural law, which forbids any man to del.berute-

That the Index hampers freedom M thought is not true, unless license 'o absorb error and to dwell on immr.ty can bo called “freedom of thought.” And the Ohurch is eminently fair and practical. Just as the doctor or chemist is permitted to Use drugs and poisons forbidden to the masses, so the well-fortified Catholic teacher or scholar may be dispensed by the proper autfibrit.es from such rules of the Index, the observance of which would interfere with a worthy work. Christ said, “Who heareth you, hearth Me," and so the appreciative Catholic bows his head in loving submission when Holy Mother Church says: “Don't read that—it's poisoned!" LOST: On Saturday, October 28. between 11 and 12 o'clock 1 lost a gold ring somewhere in the downtown area. As soon as I discovered that it was gone I retraced every inch of where I had been, but the r.ng was gone. Someone in this town had picked it up. I've always had the impression that Greencastle was a pretty nice town until this happened. I have advertised and searched in every conceivable place, but of no avail. It has simply disappeared. The ring isn't very valuable as far as money goes, but to me it is priceless I’ve simply got to find it. Please ask your friends, your children, everyone you see, if they have seen it or have any information about it. If the person, who did find it, pawned it I'll be more than happy to get it out. If you have it or any information concerning it. please bring it to the Banner office or phone or bring it to me at Mason Hall. No questions will be asked and there also is a reward. The desci.ption of the ring again is - Boy's large gold ring with the initials "K. O." It isn't doing you any good to keep it so how about returning it? Please help me to prove to myself and all other DePaUw students that Greencastle is as friendly a town as we were told. ( f' Thanks, Helen Harris 418 Mason
