SAYS VITALITY LIIT OF GOO WASHINGTON, Oct. 12. -On her 60th birthday, vigorous Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt today called her vitality “a gift of God” and outlined
a simple prescription for maintaining it. The woman who earlier this year said she would “adore being 60,” said she makes no special effort to keep
fit for her demanding routine. “I take the' sort of setting up exercises in the morning that almost everyone does. I eat breakfast. I do things that need doing during the day. And I go to bed at night,” she laughted at the news conference. Smiling as the reporters opened the conference by singing “Happy Birthday." the first lady said she hadn’t asked whether there would be a cake, hut supposed there would because “we usually do for birthdays.” Later a White House staff member said there was “quite a cake.” OVKRSKAS GIFTS: Still time to have billbolds and identification bracelets engiaved or embossed. One Less Tramp in Our Town
Esther Curless found a tramp asleep in the hammock in her apple orchard, and she didn’t hesitate a minute. She grabs a rolling pin-ami the last they saw of him, the tramp was making dust tracks to the state line. “It ain’t only that I don’t like laziness," sjlys Esther, “ '.s|iecUdly in wartime. ItVthat that particnlar hammock is Ned's ham-mock-and Xed’st Hghtin’ for it overseas!” Then she shows us Ned’s last letter where he says: H I keep dreaming of myihammock in the
orchard, with Rags lying underneath, and a cool glass of beer beside me." A soldier's picture of home! The little friendly pleasures that he misses so! From where I sit, Esther's mighty right in wanting to defend those “little things* vroffr all Intruders. They’re among the things our men look forward to returning to—the things we want to keep intact lor them.
