rixMii oin* i icnce, he became truly an educated man, in that he was able to think for himself, which after all is the real and true standard of an educated man. At an early age in life, he was compelled to provide and shift fohimself, and meet the demands of the business world, and to carve out a place In life with the limited tools i t hand. He perhaps could not clothe his thoughts in the polish and finish of a college man, but he had the language of the common people from whom he sprang, and with whom he worked and associated, and was a
part.
He came from a time and' age when men of limited learning had filled the highest offices in the gift of the people. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address will always remain with us as a masterpiece of all time, while the speech on the same occasion, of the learned Edward Everett, has long since been forgotten. Also Lincoln’s letter to Mrs. Bixby who lost five sons in the serivee of the Union Army, is now hung on the walla pf Oxford university, as a spec men of expressive thought, although the majority of the words contained therin are monosyllables. A great credit is due Mr. Crawley for his accomplishments under handicaps and limitations, for many years he has been one of the leading attorneys at this bar. He was a force-ful-advocate before a jury, due to his experiences and vision of life. He knew the common people and never atempted to get away from that atI inosphere. He spoke their language. 1 Ho understood Ihem and they underJ stood him. He always chafhpioned j their cause. Because of this .fiature. 1 he had a compassionate and genuine feeling for the under dog.
