WOMEN COAL MINERS GILLESPIE, 111, July 20. (UP) —What is said to be the country’s first women coal miners were on the job at nearby mines here today. They are Mrs. Helen P. Daniels and Mrs. I Cleora E. Campbell, employed rt nearby Sawyei vllle and Mt. Claire respectively, diggings. The mines are those owned hy the Chicago and Northwestern railroad's Supeiior Coal Company. Mine officials said the women are believed to be the first ever employed in the history of the coal industry in the actual mining of coal. The two went t<> work as “weighmen." The work, too strenuous for women years ago. has. with the installation of modern machinery, become a job which mbie officials now believe a woman can perform efficiently.
