RED ( ROSS ANGLES
His many friends in Putnam county will be glad td have news of Tommy Costello. He has been in Greencastle on a number of occasions as a teacher of Red Crow First Aid. Life Saving and Water Safety. He is still associated with Red Cross, but is in Honolulu. T. H., teaching the Army, Navy and Marines how to swim under combat. This highly specialized Red Cross training course, known as “Functional Swimming,” places emphasis on self-preservation. When the abe’s of swimming have been mastered, the trainee assumes the role of a lighter, navigating in full uniform and with rifle and pack. He soon finds that his pack floats ‘for thirty minutes or so, and that his uniform has little weight in water. He learns that his pants, his duffle bag, or his shirt, can bouy him up if be blows
air into them.
After seeing an exhibition of the swimming abilities of men who had had this Red Cross training, undersecretary of War Patterson said that he believed the course one of the most beneficial and necessary phases of military training that he had ever
seen.
