MOSCOW. Dec. 8.—(UP)—Gerninn forces, counter-attacking fiercely and without regard for losses, appeared today to have slowed the resurgent Russian armies, limiting them to a consolidation of their gains of the last three weeks. Front dispatches said the Germans maintained practically all their positions between the Don and Volga rivers, northwest and southwest of Stalingrad, where they hail been counter-attacking steadily for the last 72 hours in heavy snows. Only in the Rzhev sector, 130 miles northwest of Moscow, were new Russian successes reported. West of Rzhev, the Soviets knifed deeper Into the enemy lines despite measurably stiffened German resistance. Local successes were reported f<fv the Russians west of Rzhev and east

The stiffened German resistance stalled the red army momentarily. but cost the axis command upwards of 3.000 men killed in a day’s fighting. Fighting continued at a furious pace in the southern sector of the front, where trucks were reported sinking into deep snow drifts. The communique said Russian troops consolidated their positions in the factory area of northern Stalingrad and exchanged fire with the enemy. Russian artillery, supporting small groups of Soviet infantry, destroyed 30 German gun emplacements and silenced 13 firing points there. Upwards of 200 enemy troops were killed. I Radio Paris reported from Berlin that Soviet attacks at Stalingrad had increased in scale since Sunday, but claimed the Russians had been unable to improve their positions. It said 42 Soviet tanks had been destroyed.) German counter-attacks were repelled northwest of Stalingrad where more than 400 troops and six tanks were wiped out, the communique said. It said that although the enemy counter-attacks were fierce, “not in a single sector did the Germans succeed in regaining positions they had lost earlier or even improve their positions slightly."
