Charles Sheridan. Greencastle. did an outstanding performance portraying a real American patriot in the l i st p: rformanee of'the Old Gold Day play. ‘‘The Copperhead,” last
right in the Little Theater.
Sheridan played the part of Milt Shanks, a Cooperhead, or Northern sympathizer with the South, in the Civil War drama hy Augustus Thomas. The play was appropriate to the tunes, because it showed how a simple Illinois farmer served his country at war in the greatest way. Sheridan was ably supported in the lead role by Pauline Grossman as Mrs. Shanks, who died thinking her husband a murderer. Other prominent charact rs were Grandma Perley, played by Frances Rickett and Madeline King, Shank’s granddaugh
ter. played by Mary Baker.
The rest of the cast turned in nice performances. They include Clifford 31 mon as Joey Shanks, the 16 year old boy who wanted above all to go to war; Captain Hardy, played by William Alerton; Newt Gillespie, portrayed by Fred Tewell; Andrew, u preacher, played by Edward Maravich: Victor Zink as Lem Tollard, Copperhead. The parts of Mrs. Mannings iLoraine Larson I and Philip Manning (Ralph Shepherd) were also
< utstanding.
Other parts include Dr. Randall i Robert Hatch); Mrs. Bates (Caroline Thompson); Sue Perley (Ruth Swift); and Sam Carter (John
Thomas).
The play is the story of a man who turns Coperhead to aid Abraham Lincoln and his country. All his life he is hated and shunned in kis home town in Illinois, because no one knows of his great work. His own wife and son were ashamed of him. The climax of the play, when Shanks tells of his work for the President, is the gripping scene of
the play.
The drama was directed by Dr. Herold T. Ross and Robert E. Williams. The final performance will be at 8:15 o'clock Saturday night.
by the president. Mrs. E. R. Bartlett, the afternoon's program, “A Glimpse of Latin-American Poetry." was given by Mrs. Herold T. Ross. Mrs. Ross opened her discussion with an historical resume of the literature of our Latin-American neighbors, calling attention to the particular way in which the Spanish-A inert can is inherently poetic by nature as well as linguistically. Spanish is a particularly good language for poetry, it lieing said that, ‘‘If you don’t understand the words, even a political speech in Spanish sounds like a poem” She added that, “Spanish American poetry is like a large garden, full of flowers of every kind and color. Anyone who goes into it can father a bouquet according to his
