'HOT SHOT GAS for I SURE SHOT STARTING,

There’s nothing like hi K h test to wake up a cold, sleepy motor. And Phillips 66 Poly Gas is loaded with high test aplenty! But your comeback may well be: “That’s what you say.” Right! What this greater gasoline will do in your car is more important, and far more convincing, than anything we say about it. So try a tankful and find out the faststarting facts for yourself.

Remember, the Orange and Black 66 Shield is High Test Headquarters for car owners . . . because Phillips is the WORLD’S LARGEST PRODUCER of natural high test gasoline.

CUT NEXT WINTER’S FUEL WOOD NOV«/ Woodland owners who are cutting their fuel wood now for next year’s j home use and for sale are saving i woo 1 and work and may aid in preventing future transportation diffij oulties with other fuels for domestic j purposes during the war period, says ! f. E. Shaw, extension forester of j ?urdue University. • I Tests reveal that green wood has j from 10 to 35 per cent less heating j valu" than wood cured from nine | months to a year. Shaw says. Even, j worn! seasoned under favorable condi- , lions for only six months has an advantage over wood freshly cut. Well cured wood has the further j advantage of easy ignition, rapid ! burning, uniform heat, and freedom I from smoke, and deposits less cresote j in ti e chimney according to the U. ■ S. f)i partment of Agriculture’s For- ! est Service. In general, reports the Forest Ser- ! vice, a cord of hickory, oak, beech, birch, hard maple, ash, elm, locust, longleaf pine, or cherry is equal in heat value to a ton of coal. The cord of wood referred to is the standard cord which is 4x4x8 feet and is not ’.he usual “cord" which is one third of the standard cord, as most firewood today is cut 16 inches long instead of 48 inches. Species such as shorileaf pine, western hemlock, red gum. Douglas fir, sycamore, and soft maple require about one and a half cords to equal a ton of coal in fuel value. T wo cords of cedar, redwood, poplar, catalpa, cypress, basswood, spruce or white pine are required to equal a ton of coal. Pines give a quicker, hotter fire and are consumed in a shorter time than birch. But birch gives a more intense flame than oak, which is noted for its steady heat.
