Munson, a native of Minnesota, prepared for the ministry as a youn^ man. He graduated from St. Olaf’s College, a Lutheran institution in Minnesota, and was all set to take over a church when the last

The sergeant says he’s “still a
preacher."
A brilliant conversationalist and 1 ru< hte in history, Munson devotes a great portion of his time talking to young men. He works in battalion headquarters of a recruit organizawar ti n. Should a down-in-the-mouth yardbird come along, the sergeant went j takes him aside and talks the recruit
into liking the army.
In addition to his work and talking Munson reads about 10 fulllength books each week, including history, political affairs, fiction and
autobiography.
The sergeant is almost a legendary figure It is said he has turned down the job of warrant officer (who ranks between a master sergeant and a second lieutenant) several times. He never bothered to secure a reserve
commission.
One story told is that Munson caught a train to Washington once when he had been drafted as a warrant officer. He begged his superiors not to give him the job. “I don’t want a job like that,” he I said “It takes me away from the
j men.”
The sergeant has great pride in fact that his father, entering Minn. sota from Canada as an agent for Hudsons Bay Company, was a pioneer settler near Crookston, Minn. Munson is related to a one-time Minnesota governoi and famous U. S. senator Knute Nelson. With his army career nearly ended, : the sergeant clings to the hope that
