Mis. H. F. Rethers, wife of Major General Harry F. Rethers of Los Angeles. Calif., visited briefly Monday with Everett W. Jones en route to Washington, D. C. At one time in his military life, Mr. Jones served in the 9th United States Infantry, which at that time was commanded by Mrs. Rether’s father, the late General Jesse M. Lee. Ora Case, 71 years old, who was born in Putnam county and who ipent his early years in this county, committed suicide, according to the Owen county coroner, at the Owen county infirmary Monday, in a bathtub. He had been despondent because of his wife's death and becau-.. of his own ill health. The couple were not destitute and were boarders at the infirmary, but had been taken there because they could not care for themselves. They had the iare privilege of hearing an experienced mountain climber tell of his thrilling climbs in the Rockies both in United States and in Canada. Harris Peel of Decatur, Illinois, freshman iu DePauw and the convocation speaker, with three friends gained his first experience in rope climbing under the tutelage of a guide in Estes Park a few years ago. Since this time he has climbed Long’s Peak as far as man has ever climbed it; he was a member a party, the fifth such ever to succeed in the attempt, to reach the summit of M:. St. Elius in Canada an altitude of 18.000 feet. It was during this experience that Mr. Peel became completely blind in addition to suffering many other physical discomforts, and because of this had to be carried the last few thousand feet. However, their success in reaching the top was worth all that he had suffered on their ascent. Tiie speaker’s next ambition, he sain i- to climb Mt. Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Andas, which reaches a height of 23,000 feet. If this attempt is successful, he hop's to he asked to join the American Alpine Club, membership in which is considered a great honor.
