PASTI KF Stilt MIL (Contlnurd from I'nicr Otifi ing Putnam county pasture conditions one of them educational, involving a special study of causes and cures of run-down pastures; the ottn r being the organized approach, with the utilization of soil conservation methods and labor. “But. why produce more? There is a surplus now, wc arc informed," said Mr. Hcmmer. “The farmer must study his land ami must retire from corn production land which seems to be wearing out in that sort of production. He must retire marginal land from corn production before it becomes entirely worthless from a too-lntensive cropping in corn. Land can be depleted by erosion in the production of some sorts of crops. Put it in the kind of crops adapted to : top that waste, such as grass or hay crops. It may he better adapted to pasture for dairy purposes, not on'y making better use of it but lowering the cost per pound of butter fat in the fanner’s dairy.” Mr. Hemmer told of the penal farm’s $3 100 crop of turkeys this year, out of which vast number of birds only 500 went into the private market, the remainder being sold to other state institutions he said. The same applied to the big apple crop, excepting that, in that instance, none at all competed with private growers. “We do not care to compete with the piivate individuals,” he stated em-

phatically.

David L. Grimes, county farm agent, arose ami stated Mr. O'Halt and Mr. Hemmer had caused his mind to become inspired with a thought. He said It was a real compliment to those two gentlemen that they could thus arouse his mind. His thought was that it would be fine if someone would write a song about the beautifully waving pastures of Putiam county. Mr. Grimes said it has been observed by him that our pastures are generally over-grazed. Oliver C. Lee Purdue university weed specialist, talked informingly on 'Weeds poisonous to livestock '* lie said: “There arc not very ma:^ weeds around here that are poisonous to stock. In early spring, hogs and pigs that feed in wet fields sometime i eat the young cocklebur leaves which are very poisonous while they are In two-leaf stage of growth, on va.ung plants *t’hey are rot injurious at other stages of growth. Wild cherry sprouts in the spring and in mid-summet air rich in prussic acid, which kills. Water hemlock, which grows principally along ditches and In wet soli, is poisonous. It belongs to the carrot family, ami has white blossoms and tuberous roots. “Larkspur, and dutchman's breeches are mildly poisonous White snake root, growing only In wooded areas, which bears intensely white blossoms the first week in September, usually, causes trembles in livestock and milk sickness in human beings. Too much feeding of sweet clover can cause a j condition of the blood In which the blood refuses to clot.’’ M. O. Pence, also of Purdue university, talked instructively on “Rotated
