Lucius K. Chapin, long-time clt*' iztn of Creeneastle, whose father was mayor of the city, a postmaster at (Ireencastle, and a merchant, was a young man in the days in Greencastle when there was, piMbably, more real fun rampant among the people than there is now. Mr. Chapin participated in all of it be could and, these days, entertains his friends with tales of happenings of that kind of which he had knowledge. He had many serious hours working with ins father in their store, and as deputy iHKStmaster, and travelling for a big manufacturing firm, which work took him into all parts of the south part of the United States, but in all of his jobs he found something to make him laugh ever since. One incident which could have become serious for him had to do with Uriah T. Ashley, former policeman of Greencastle, a figure living here now only in tradition. Both Mr. Chapin and Mr. Ashley were working nights, those days, the former carrying mail between the postoffice and railroad stations, and the latter a night officer. "There had been some talk about
"In that same store,” continued Mr. Chapin, "one cool morning, I put a little piece of candle on a piece of cardbpard, lighted the wick, and put the lighted candle in the big heating stove, which had enough cracks in it to let the candle light show. Men came In, commented on the coolness of the air, lifted their coat tails and stood with their backs to the stove, talking about bow good the heat felt.”

Mr. Ashley claiming his policeman’s shield had saved his life by stopping a bullet fired at him by a marauder and I made up my mind to try him out. It was spowing hf^rd, and ap I walked past the entrance to the First National Bank I saw Ashley back In it, keeping out of the storm, but watching things, as I found out. 1 began sneaking along from door to door, and when I reached our store, where Sam Hanna’s is now, I suddenly jerked the door open and slipped in, leaving the door open. I got behind a counter, nearly out of sight, in the darkness, and waited. I began to think Ashley hadn’t seen me go in the store ,and was about to step out, when I heard a voice almost at my very elbow, ‘Is that you, Mr. Chapin?’ It was Ashley, who had gone Into that dark store alone with the intention of arresting, single-handed, any Illegal intruder he might find there, if any.
