Previews and Reviews AT LOCAL THEATERS J
Voncasfle
Fortified with an almost inexhaustible supply of humorous antics. John Barrymore stars with his repertoire of howling histrionics in "The Great Profile.” The picture, which comes Friday and Saturday to the Voncastle Theatre, is a hilarious creation keyed to catch the madcap Barrymore at Iris best. From the opening scene, IT'S FUNNY! When Darryl F. Zanuck, renowned 20th Century-Fox producer, decided to film "The Great Profile,” the cotnety about a great actor beset by complications of all kinds, the ebullient and versatile John Barrymore was considered a "natural" for the role—and a happy piece of casting it was. Always a master of repartee and lightning fast with the "quip,’’ Barrymore has been widely acclaimed as the champion among adlibbers. Theatre-goers who have been curious to hear the famous Barrymore ad lib and mirth-provoking remarks will have that opportunity in “The Great Profile,” for the script was made flexible enough to include many of his sparkling aphorisms.
Granada
Nick Carter, in the person of Walter Pidgeon, goes in for hectic new adventure in “Sky Murder,” third of the popular detective series, coming Friday and Saturday to the Granada Theatre. Pidgeon crosses swords with a mysterious band of international cr.minals following a murder in a luxury airliner, trace 1 the organization to its lair and captures the "man behind,” amid such thrills as walking on an airplan-' wing, fighting on a careening truck and, between thrills, getting into all manner of hilarious comedy scrapes through flirtations with Joyce Compton and other feminine charmers. The picture also introduces Karen Verne, new discovery fiom England. Players include Donald Meek, Edward Ashley, Tom Conway, George Lessey, Dorothy Tree, Flank Reicher, Chill Wills, Tom Neal and William Tannen. Also Ken Maynard in "In Old Sante Fe.”
Chateau
Boasting one of the strongest supporting casts, beautiful scenery and a fast moving stoiy, “Arizona Frontier" starring singing cowboy Tex Ritter is due to open tonight at the Chateau Theatre. For this feature, producer Edward Finney took the entire troupe to iPrescott, Arizona, where the picture was made on some of the local ranches. Local cowboys were recruited for many of the background and atmosphere shots. One of the outstanding members of the cast include Jim Thorpe, world renowned Indian athlete Thorpe, who attended the Haskell Indian school and later Carlisle school in Pennsylvania, was a member of the American Olympic Game; team in 1912. He was later signed by the New York Giants before founding his own baseball team.
