The Place Of The Church
Rev. Claude M. CcClure America would be far safer if she looked to the Christian church for guidance instead of to the economists and politicians. It is impossible to get away from the fact that the principles of life which the Man of Galilee enunciated are the only ones which can furnish the solution to both individual and national problems. It is a piece of human stupidity not to recognize that fact and a greater one not to act on it. The Bible proclaims everywhere that we are our brother's keeper It was Jesus who in a remarkable story made the principle of being a good neighbor the great ideal towards which all men should strive. An editorial writer in Collier's a little while ago made a very wise statement. Wrote he, "The churches have kept their hold in America and have continued to grow because they fill a basic need in our lives. Ideals and aspirations make men different from other animals. Merely to live, to bring children into the world, to struggle for material possessions or power has never satisfied men. Other needs which only the churches have served have always driven men to religion.’’ The test of the value of any institution is what it contributes to human life. Christia.nity has proved its worth, as the study of the pages of history amply reveals. It has enthroned ethics and morality, kindness and unselfishness. It has furnished the highest ideals of human behavior, empowered men for successful living, and contributed more than any other thing to the advancement of the race and the progress of civilization. Religion is indeed essential to life. Oliver Wendell Holmes said: “I am a regular church goer. I should go for various reasons if I did not love it; but I am fortunate enough to find great pleasure and profit in it. There is in my heart a little plant called Reverence which wants to be watered once a week.”
