$2 901.33.
‘‘The amount of gravel and stone 1 “There were less than eight miles put on roads in 1910 is 20.197 cubic of black top surface put on Putnam yards; the amount of gravel and roads in 1939,'’ said Mr. Johnson, stone put on in 1939 was 14.526 cubic “and the work was carried on with
the same amount of money avail-
able."
In continuing his speech Mr. Johnson tinned to national topics. "These so-called defense trips the President is making are clear violations of the Hatch act,” he said. I “They are political trips, made by a candidate for re-election. It is quite noticeable that when ever Mr. Willkie enters a certain section of the j country to talk to the voters, Mr. P.oosevelt finds it necessary to follow him into those sections to talk defense, as he calls it> and you pay the cost of these trips. It costs you i $1,200 foi Mr. Roosevelt to make one trip from Washington to New York
J in his special train.” .
“The present hysteria about preparation for defense, is inexcusable," Mr. Johnson averred. “Mr. Roosevelt has known for years that we are ; not prepared for war, but he wouldn't let anyone tell the public about it. General Haywood was removed from his army command because he told Congress the truth about our lack of preparation, and General Mitchell was summarily dismissed, for the same offense, but. when the public revolted against his removal, he was restored, but immediately afterward
retired from the army.

conditions abroad, but again the public revolted and demanded that Congress remain in session, against the President’s expressed wishes, he wanting to have a free hand in controlling the destinies of the nation in
the impending crisis.
“The President has pushed this war hysteria to the front just before this election to cover up his failures
in the economic fields.
“These young men who are registering today are to be sent to socalled ‘permanent tent camps’ where their very lives will be in danger when cold weather comes. “They are being told they will be given a year pf military training but the law provided that they are subject to call for army service any time during ten years after that one year, so that they are being conscripted for a possible eleven years of army
service.
“Are we now actually in war. or not?" asked Mr. Johnson. “What are our government’s secret committmehts, about which we are being told nothing ? “I will r. . cr support any measure which will rush American young men into a war with which we have no direct national connection. I will oppose such a thing to my last
breath.
“Then, too," stated Mr. Johnson, "the administration is playing politics with relief. The government is buying votes with the relief money which wo all are contributing.”
One entertaining little by-scene at
the Noble Johnson speaking in the
Court room, Wednesday evening, came during the preliminary part FOR SALE: of the meeting, while M . Ogles was j Henry Williams,
yet talking. A good-looking lady i was ushered into the room and" given '. scat among these on the platform. Pretty soon, Mr. Johnson, gazing around the room, saw her and hur:ied to her, 'giving her a very affectionate kiss upon her smooth cheek and conversing with her awhile, before resuming his seat. There was quite a bit of whispering by persons in the audience, by persons who did not know who she was and who wondered why Mr. Johnson should so publicly display an affec-
tion for her.

TRAILER VAGABOND by WARREN BAYLEY KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK, CALIFORNIA Many years ago a Cherokee Indian by the name of Sc-quoyah, perfected an alphabet of 86 symbols with a character representing every sound in the tongue of his tribe. It is said that with this alphabet a Cherokee child could learn to read and write his native language in a day, and that within a short time after the official acceptance of the alphabet by the tribe, illiteracy was completely wiped out. The change brought about by the introduction of this means of expressing thought on paper was remarkable. A printing press was established, type made of the various symbols, and the news of the day printed in two newspapers. Their laws were printed in Sequoyah’s alphabet, also the Gospels and many other books both useful and interesting to the Cherokee people, who thus made rapid advances in general knowledge and civilization. In tribute to this Indian the Big Trees of California were named Sequoia gigantra the largest and oldest living things on earth. These arc the trees that people won’t believe when they see them. During the Philadelphia Exposition, one was cut and a section of ib trunk shipped >rast for exhibition. Because of its great size it was
necessary to split the section into several parts for shipment. The parts were carefully reassembled upon its arrival. The exhibition was a failure. Visitors to the Exposition looked at the log, smiled and walked away. Because of the seams, all believed it was several trees cleverly joined into one. From north to south, the first of tlie big trees are in the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite • National Park This grove contains some 200 trees, 10 feet or over in diameter at breast height. Two are really big—the YVowona and the Grizzly Giant. The YVawona is the famous tunn"! tree with the road running through its trunk. The tunnel was cut in 1881, is 8 feet wide and 26 feet long. The Gizzly Giant is considered -the oldest tree in the grove; its age estimated at 3800 years. It has an average base diameter of 27.6 feet and reaches 209 feet into the sky. Before coming down here, I would have bet those two trees were the largest in the world. As it turned out, they were mere saplings. Today I stood at the base of the General Grant Tree, here in King’s Canyon National Park. This tree is o huge its size is hard to visualize. Us greatest horizontal diameter is 40.3 feet at the base and at 200 feet above the ground it is still over 12 feet through. Its complete height is 267 Teet. This tree, although not the largest, is the most celebrated. In 1925 it was designated as the Nation’s Christmas Tree. At high noon on Christmas Day each year, devotional and patriotic services are held at its base. These services have been broadcast over a nation-wide hookup and Presidential messages have constituted a part of the program.
