The Making of a Citizen
Saluting of the flag alone does not make a citizen. Nor does the marking of a ballot. Citizenship is something far deeper, far richer, far more important than mere physical gestures. Citizenship is a responsibility ... a responsibility so vital that without its practice this country could not exist. America became a republic because its leaders recognized and accepted the responsibility of citizenship. It has grown to be one of the greatest powers on earth because its people accepted this responsibility. Now, at a time when we are the one great republic left in the world it is vitally important that every American become an American Citizen! There are thousands of American Citizens in Putnam County. And there are many more in the making—“first voters,” we call them. Most of them knew what is expected of them when they are initiated into Citizenship. . A few are confused as to the responsibilities they are about to accept. THE PUTNAM COUNTY CITIZENSHIP WEEK PROGRAM has been worked out—by and for the American Citizen (present and future)—of this community. GIVE IT YOUR WHOLEHEARTED SUPPORT!

FOOTBALL OVER STATE DePauw had an open dale Satu*--I day. so Coach Gaumy Neal took his j Tigers down to Bloomington where they watched Texas stop the CrimI son eleven, 13 to 6. This Saturday j the local collegians make their first I home appearance of the season with I Franklin furnishing the fireworks at j Blackstock field. | Over at Columbus, O., Purdue's Boil ’rmakers lost a heartbreaker to j Ohio State, 17 to 14, in a Big Ten gridiron struggle. A field goal In the last nineteen seconds of play for the Buckeyes prevented the tilt fiom ending in a tie at 14-all.
Notre Dame climaxed Knute Bockne Week by trimming Alonzo Staggs’ College of the Pacific team, 25 to 6. It looks as though Coach Rimer Layden has another group of Fighting Irish up South Been way.
Wabash trounced the Franklin Grizzlies 20 to 0, while Butler and Ohio University fought to a 7-7 draw. Centre, home of the famous "Praying Colonels," walloped Hanover SB to 0. Manchester and Georgetown ended hostilities wpUi the scoreboard reading 0 to 0. Valparaiso drubbed Indiana State, 13 to 0; Earlham and Central Normal quit even at 13 to 13. Louisville defeated Evansville, 13 to 7, and Central State of Michigan shaded Ball State, 7 to 0.
Hooray for Brazil! The Bricks came through with their initial win of the fall campaign Friday when they downed Linton by a 6 to 2 decision. This victory followed three straight setbacks, but the Brazil boys have just kept plugging away and they finally registered on the right side of the 1c iger.
BOWLING SCHEDULE Ten local teams open the 1940-41 bowling season tonight at the university alleys. This week’s schedule follows: Tonight, 7:30—Midwest vs Rotary. Tuesday—Home Laundry vs. Coca Cola. Wed.—University vs Zinc B. Thurs.—Eitel’s vs Zinc A. Fri.—Kroger’s vs O. & I.
MEETING WEDNESDAY Owing to conflicting dates, the meeting of the “DownTown” Coaches will be held Wednesday evening at 7:30 o’clock instead of Thursday as previously announced. The pictures will be shown in the assembly room of the court house at that hour and the public is cordially invited.
No matter who wins, it’s been a good series. Far different than last year and the year before that when the Yanks took four in a row both times. Of course, we picked Detroit a week ago to cop the champ’s crown but the Reds have put up a real fight evefy step of the way and still could upset our dope bucket.
REMEMBER WHEN— The old stonewall was popular with students. Liz Burton played fullback for DePauw. E. R. Bartley was interurban agent. “Big” Smith was Greencastle's coach. Gentlemen preferred bonds to blondes!
W. E. Bailsman's Renssalaer outfit continues on Its winning march by crocking Crown Point, 21 to 0. Yes sir, the former Tiger Cub mentor is going very well again this year. Proteges of Art Gross, ex-Cub athlete, took it on the chin when Sheibyville sank Westfield, 21 to 7.
Other high school contests of interest the past weekend included Crawfordsville’s 21-7 victory over Lafayette. Bloomington smothered Washington, 25 to 0; Central of Evansville subdued Vincennes, 14 to 6, and Columbus tamed Seymour also by a 14-6 count.

THE WORLD SERIES With the standing knotted at 2 games each, Detroit sluggers pounded three Cincinnati moundsmen yesterday afternoon to win, 8 to 0, and forge ahead in the current World Series. Buck Newsom, turned in a magnificent hurling job, holding the Reds to three scattered hits, while winning his second tilt of the Fall classic. Schoolboy Rowe and Bucky Walters were to be the opposing twirlers today as the scene shifted back to Cincinnati for the sixth encounter, weather conditions permitting. Should the Reds tie up the Series, Detroit will have Tommy Bridges for duty in the seventh and final battle while Cincinnati would most likely call big Paul Derringer.
