Putnam county residents are taking full advantage of the few weeks before cold weather to make needed repairs to their homes and properties. Contractors, lumber companies tinners, plumbers and others in the : uilding trades are reporting con siderable improvement in busines ue to requests for re-roofing, sidings, insulation work etc. It seems that it is fully realized by county folk that it is wise to make thosv necessary repairs now to assure comfort in their homes rather than wait until later when a last minute tush might mean further delay. Some of the activity noted in Creencastle and the county are: Ernest Lewis, Manhattan, who is making considerable improvements to his home after having moved it back from the highway due to the widening of route 40; Ben Blaydes, re-roofing home at corner of Illinois and Elm streets; Miss Dorothy Knudson, installation of bathryom and remodeling; John Hinkle, Maple Heights, adding 2 rooms to houa: and improving appearance generally; and W. O. Caviness, extensive remodeling and painting. Business concerns are also giving thought to the question of remodeling as seen in the improvements being made by John Meloy to the Shell Filling Station of north Jackson street, and Frank English in the remodeling of the Star Bilna^d Rooms.

California’s adaption of the American Colonial low rambling house of spacious rooms and appointments suitable for a family of four, is this "House of the Month,” designed by Architect H. Roy Kelley. The walls of the central mass are built of large sized bricks, painted white, and are the size of the adobe bricks used by the early Spanish builders—4" x 17" face dimensions. The walls of the adjoining "wings are covered with cement plaster and painted white. The exterior trim and the windows are also painted white and tho entrance doer and the shutters are soft light-yellow in color. The steps, porch floor and walks are of 1 red brick. The walls of the Living ! Room, the hall and all of the bed rooms are papered with colorful papers—some of which are semimodernistic in design; others are old Colonial adaptations. The woodwork of all rooms Is white-ivory in color. Tho dining room is panelled in

wood and enameled Ivory in color. Fireplace end of the Living Room is treated In a similar manner. The walls of the bathrooms and kitchen are papered with washable paper, and these rooms have plain colored linoleum floors. All the other rooms have wide oak planking, In dark colors. Out-of-the-ordinary features are: three baths, one with both tub and shower; two-car garage with adjoining tool room, and a room with bath for the maid, convenient to the kitchen. All rooms are crossventilated except the maid's room. Sleeping quarters are set apart in

a wing of their own. To be well built, this house should include copper flashings, gutters and downspouts. Brass pipe or copper water tube, which are standard for plumbing should also be specified; these will not rust and will effectively withstand corrosion. Copper shields protect (he house against the invasion of termites. In order to cut as much red tape as possible and to help assure good construction Ibis house is approved by tho Federal Homo Loan Bank Board for registration under the Federal Home BuildingServicc Plan.

FOSTER HOME OF COIONIAL DESIGN On Higgert Street in North wood, William Foster is comfiletlnj; the building of a new home which is Colonial in design and very attractive. The new taome, of white pine siding with green shuttered windows and green asbestos roof, faces south and is a story and a half with jormcr windows on the second fldov. On entering the house one iteps light into the living room, a long room with windows in the south nr.d east wall. Opening off the nor’h wall are two doorways, the one to >h* east leading to a hall from which there are doors with access to tho basement, the kitchen, or a covered porch which forms a walk to the garage; the one on the we-d opening into a hall from which there is a stairway to the second flo.i", the bathroom, and two bedrooms. The kitchen, when comp'eted will be white with red trim whil the bathroom will be white with blue trim. On the second floor there is largo bedroom with a dormer end two other windows. DISILLUSIONED ROBBER HANGS SELF IN CELL NORWOOD, Mass., (UP)—Whei William Johnson was robbing a house here, he took time out to open a can of sardines and feed a pet cat. Before hanging himself in his cell, Johnson told police that his victims were "all liars.” He said he obtained only $74 from one house, but that the occupants reported a loss of $94.

Proper Drainage Proper drainage should be provided under concrete floors and porch slabs and around wall footings and foundation walls, it is suggested by officials. Small homes which have no basements should have the underfloor spaces well drained if a dry condition is to be maintained.

Shower Fixtures The shower head, if placed on the wall, should be located so that the lowest part of the head is approximately 5 feet 4 inches from the floor. If an overhead shower is used, the lowest part of the head should be at least 6 feet and 6 inches from the floor. Mixing faucets are usually placed so that the faucets are about 4 feet 6 inches from the floor. Combined or separate soap tray and hand grip may be placed about 5 feet above the floor. If the shower enclosure is not to be equipped with a door, locate the rod for the shower curtain at a height of about 6 feet 6

inches.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to define good taste. People’s preferences and opinions differ on practically every item in everyday life. Selecting the style of a house is included in this category. However, there is one general rule that may be followed: A combination of simplicity and functionalism is almost always sure to achieve an harmon-

ious and attractive result.

The roof, for example, should be planned to include a line as long as

Q. What type and weight of roofing felt is recommended for use under slate? What is meant by sningle exposure, and what are the allowable exposures for slate? A. Under slate use a saturated asphalt roofing felt weighing not less than SO pounds per 100 square feet The exposure of a shingle is the portion not covered by the next course above or the length of the shingle exposed to the weather. Since the standard lap of alternate shingle courses used in laying slate on sloping roofs is three inches, the proper exposure is computed by deducting three inches from the length of the ' slate and dividing by two. This ! means that for a 14-inch slate the' exposure should not exceed five anil , one-half inches; for a 16-inch slate, | six and one-half inches; and for an I 18-inch slate, seven and one-half | inches. Proper exposures to the | possible for a restful and pleasing | effect. Badly proportioned attic and dormer windows, irregularities and sharp angles should be avoided. Walls should be simple, with windows and doors fitting the general design of the house and located in proportion to each other. Under-size or conspicuous chimneys ruin the architec-

tural appearance.

The use of color can reflect good or bad taste. Before selecting your colors, study the surroundings, landscape and neighboring houses, in addition to your own preferences. For advice in the field, the prospective homeowner may write to the Federal Housing Administration for their "Principles of Planning Small Homes,” or to manufacturers who have prepared material on the subject, such as: Certainteed Products Corporation, The American Radiator Company, Pittsburgh Plate Glass

Company and others.

weather for longer or shorter shingles can be determined in the same

Q. Is it good construction practice for wood joists or girders to enter masonry walls below grade? A. This structural condition should he avoided. However, if necessary, the members should be treated with an effective wood preservative before installation. Provide a one-inch air space for ventilation on each side of each structural member built into masonry walls above or below grade. Waxed Floors It is not a wise policy to use an oiler mop on waxed floors, as the oil softens the wax. Waxed floors should be swept with a mop or soft brush entirely free from oil.

Just north of the square on Jackion street, Louis Flint has opened a new self-service drive-in market. This market is so completely modern 'hat it rivals the big drive-in markds usually found only in cities much larger than Greencastle. The proprietor of the new market is Louis Flint who for many yearn iperated the old frame store just north of the present modern structure. The old building, which for sixteen years was operated by Tom Flint, has been torn down so as tn make a complete driveway circling the new building. Novel features found in the now market are the large plate glass winlows which cover the front and part of the sides of the building, the carriages for customers to place their merchandise in and the spaciousness of the interior so that there will bo ample room to take care of a large crowd at all times. Part of the policy of the Flints in operating their business has always been to buy the best Putnam county cattle they could buy and it has been their meat business which has made it possible for them to build this new master market. Both Tom and Louis Flint cordially extend an invitation to the public of the eounty to come in and inspect their new market at any time. It is with pride that Greencastle notes this progress in merchandising, as carried on by one of the old business families of the community, for it helps to make Greencastle a more complete shopping unit.
