under slate? What is meant by shingle exposure, and what are the allowable exposures for slate? A. Under slate use a saturated asphalt roofing felt weighing not less than 30 pounds per 100 square feet. The exposure of a shingle is the portion not covered by the next course above or the length of the shingle exposed to the weather. Since the standard lap of alternate shingle courses used in laying slate on sloping roofs is 3 inches, the proper ex posure is computed by deducting inches from the length of the slate and dividing by two. This means that for a 14-inch slate the exposure should not exceed 5 1 . inches; for a 16-inch slate. 6 1 - inches; and for an 18-inch slate, 7 1 . inches. Proper exposures to the weather for longer or shorter shingles can be determined n the same manner. Q. How can a garbage container lie concealed ? A. Shunning expensive materials and eliminating the dining room to reduce waste space to a minimum, the builders of this home have produced a dwelling that could w^dl serve as a standard in its price range. For the purposes of economy, the kitchen and bathroom are located together, thus centralizing the plumbing and saving materials. The home has a full-sized basement. Valued at $3,000, the Federal Housing Administration insured a mortgage on the property of $2,400. A mortgage of this amount may he paid off over a period of 25 years with average monthly payments of less than $11, exclusive of local taxes and hazard insurance.

Just Ask Me.
Q. Every time it rains severtl of our windows swell, and we are unable to open them until they dry out. is there any way we can remedy this
condition ?
A. Loosen the stop which holds the window sash in place. If this does rot improve the condition, wait until th: sash is dry and apply a thin coat of paste floor wax throughout the length of the grooves the sash slides in. Painting the grooves with lin- ; eed oil also may be helpful. If the windows are too tight even when dry, it will be necessary to remove the sash and plane down one side. Weatherstripping the windows will provide easy sliding of the sash and will reduce air infiltration.

the paper. Dear Mr. Morris: We are contemplating putting an oil burner in our cast iron furnace but we have heard it said this will not be satisfactory as the oil fumes will escape. We would appreciate it if you, through this service in the Banner, would give us some advice on this subject. Sincerely yours, T. T. B. T. T. B. I will advise you not to place an oil burner in a coal burning furnace. Oil fumes are but a small factor, the teal reason is that your furnace was d, signed to bum eoal, not oil. If you want economical heat either install a stoker in your present furnace or buy a complete, new oil burning unit, one fhat is designed as an integral unit, burner and furnace. J. T, M. Dear Mr. J. T. Morris; Will landscaping improve the cost of our property very much and if so about what percent. As landscaping is rather expensive we. have hesitated to do very much of it but some of our neighbors have informed me that the landscaping cost will more than offset the increased value of my property. i I am not sure that this is a quesjtion for an architectural designer to answer but I would appreciate any advice which you can give me. Sincerely yours, H. S. M. B. S. M. Proper landscaping can be done only by a person familiar with such wink. Good landscaping need not be expensive and will definitely add to the value of your property, whether it is a small cottage or a large mansion. J. T. M.
Dividing Large Kitchens Large old-fashioned kitchens offer many possibilities for modernization. If less space is desirable, a big kitchen can be easily divided off intrt several units with the aid of funds obtained from qualified lending institutions. Surplus kitchen area may be converted into any one of the fol lowing uses: dining alcove, household office with planning desk and telephone extension, pantry or storeroom, downstairs lavatory, or closets for clothing or cleaning materials.
In this music room and in the adjoining living room, totally-indirect lighting fixtures were used. The gold-and-ivory finish of the metal
blends nicely with the room's furnishings. the old-style, bare-bulh chandeliers, are available at prices that are well within the reach of the most modest
purse.
For the soft lighting ctlert that so many homemakers prefer, the total-ly-indlrect type of fixture is recommended. Directing all of its light to the ceiling, which then acts as a reflector, it gives the room a smooth and even atmosphere of lighting which adds appeal and makes tho room more "homey”. The newer living room lighting fixtures are made in all-metal ami metal-andglass combinations. In selecting yours, make certain that its design harmonizes with the room's architectural and decorative scheme, and that its size is not only adequate from an illumination standpoint, but also takes into consideration room-dimensions and ceiling height.

lintEBEVER the eyes and hands TT have work to do—and this includes most family pursuits—the need for properly-designed overhead lighting soon makes itself apparent. Floor and table lamps are important adjuncts to the lighting scheme of the living room, but should not bo made to nrtume the entire burden. Adequate general illumination, controlled by a single wall switch, permits safe freedom of movement and easo of seeing that make the entire room usable by every member of
the family.
In recent years, the lighting fixture industry has given increasing study to equipment that beautifies as well as it illuminates. The result is that today, attractive overhead lighting fixtures, totally unlike
