One hlacksnake in Putnam county who evidently had not read in the newspapers that the groundhog had said there would be six weeks more of winter, dating from Ground Hog day, ventured out in the open Sunday on Foster Jones’ place five miles east of Greencastle and lost his life—because he had not read his newspapers. Mr Jones measured the reptile and it was four and a half feet long. Blacksnakes are among the first to leave their dens, when milder weather comes, but it is unusual for one to be seen so early as this one was

seen.
