Wayne White, also of Belle Union, in onr Iasi tabulation in tenth place, shoots up to seventh place while Charles Broadstreet of Belle Union gin's from ninth to eighth place with 53 points. This pushes Coffey and York of Greencastle to ninth and tenth places respectively. Latest tabulations are as

1940’s basketball season opens on Friday night with nearly every town in the county the scene of a tilt in that great Hoosier sport. Most of the battles will be worth seeing as Greencastle meets Brazil here, Russellville meets Waveland there, Roachdale is host to Ladoga, Fillmore is host to Stilesville, Belle Union entertains Quincy, and Cloverdale goes to Bainbrldge. The Greencastle-Brazll tilt will be preceded by a B team game. The two games will start at the usual time and it is expected that this will be a first class ball game with Greencastle having the edge. The Russellville vs. Waveland game will probably show the most fight as Russellville and Waveland are such near neighbors and have been old time basketball rivals. Waveland was the winner of the sectional tourney in Montgomery county last year. Russellville has a fine record of eight wins and two losses that we know of. In a previous game with Waveland, played December 15th, Russellville won 21 to 17 after a tie score of 9-9 at the half. The game is at Waveland and should be a victory for Russellville. At Roachdale on Friday night, Ladoga, Roachdale’s near northern neighbors, will be guests. These two teams are keen rivals as they are in different counties and yet towns of so near the same size. This game should be one of the best played by Roachdale. A previous encounter was held this year at Ladoga on November 29th. We give Roachdale the edge over the Canners. Fillmore will be hosts to Stilesville on Friday. The only other record we have of Stilesville is their defeat at the hands of Belle Union, 22 to 18, and from this we would say j it will be a close battle with Fillmore
the victors.
Belle Union will have an easy time with Quincy as their guests. In a
previous battle, at Quincy, the Belle NEWUENTS SUC CESSOR MAY BE Union lads won 34 to 29. j ANNOUNCED BY In the Bainbridge gym will be the FRIDAY

TIGER QUINTET MEETS PURPLE ACES TONIGHT
•
DoPauw's Tiger quintet will meet fhe Evansville Purple Aces at Evansville this evening in what will be a return encounter. In the first game of the season with the Evansville College quintet the Tigers were defeated 43 to 31. On the Purple Ace quintet are some of the best basketball men in the state. For a while predictions had it that the Evansville team would be
the best
The Tigers have been working out all through the holiday season and will be trying for a comeback after their defeat at the hands of Evansville December 14 and Carroll College five days later.
Due to the latest reports from Belle Union, which now brings cur material on that team up to date, we find that in the inter-county standings they have come from sixtn place up to third place with an average of .66 Belle Union won six and
lost three games.
In intra-county standing they moved from third to second place passing up Russellville who now slips into third place. Belle Union has .75.
They won three and lost one intra- erous under the basket, having such
tremendous strength and height that opposing players roll off his back in their wild scramble to stop him from
shooting.
In booking the colored cage stars here the local Legion Post has promised to show basketball fans in Putnam county the best court attraction in the country today. Playing a fud season of almost 150 games the Hens have become almost perfect in the execution of their plays and the manner in which they handle the basketball. During the last three seasons they have played a total of 423 games against the best teams in the
total
of 370 games.

coach to fill in the vacancy left by country and they have won
the resignation of Harold H. Newgent, former Greencastle resident hail coached there for many years.
Action following the resignation of Coach Newgent was delayed as one of the three members of the school board was absent from the city. Tills member will return today so that the board will probably meet at once to
name a successor.
Ross Dorsett, Sapling coach and assistant to the Pirate mentor, has been working out the varsity crew. He will continue in this post until the new coach is named and takes
over the position.
The resignation of Mr. Newgent, while regretted deeply by the school administration, is said to have .not |

TENNESSEE DEFEATED FIRST TIME IN TWO 1 EARS IN \N N t \L ROSE BOWL GAME PASADENA, U:11 . Jar. 2 lUPl Tennessee’s football force rolled back toward Knoxville today, sadder, soriy. wiser, and richer. The Volunteers were sadder because they were ( beaten 14 to 0 in the Rose Bowl, soiry because Southern Califo nit-. Giants fce.nged them from pillar l - post, wiser because they had had a look at the best football t ain in th. country, and richer because their cut of the sellout game netted them up ward of $115,000. Tennessee's proud record exists no more. They went into tire Rose Bowl unbeaten in 23 games, and unscomi upon during the 1939 season. Now the Vols will have to start I! ' vi: again. Because the Trojans meste i up that beautiful record by banging across touchdowns in the secon I and fourth quarters. The 14 to o triumph of the South ern Californians marked their sixth straight Rose Bowl victory and it was absolutely reserved. As Bob Zuppke. famed Illinois coach, said after the game, "The Trojans didn't, finesse the Vols. they just knocked them off the field." And that is just what they did. Us ing 25 tremendous specimens of manhood, Southern California relic Ion power, and still more power, to tea 1 the Tennessee defense apart. From kickoff to the final whistle the Trojans piled it on. And Tennessee, game as it was, simply couldn’t withstand the ceaseless pressure. No one was higher in praise of the Southern California juggernaut than Major Bob Neyland, coach of the beaten invaders. ‘‘They were terrific,'' Neyland said '1 have never seen a better team than Southern California was in the Bowl , today. The lien was great but the ; backfield was the deciding factor Lawdy, there was no end to the big, | fast, anditou.gh hacks they tin,w at us. I want to especially congratulate Amby Schinlder.
