(Continued from I'nigrr portant citizen of Greencastle during that early period and for some time filter. Mr. Brown built the property on the west side of the court house square in Greencastle on which the present Sudranskl buildings stand, the assembly room on an upper floor being known as Brown's Hall. Mr. Brown was a heavy stockholder in the old nail ndll and lost his investment in it after it was moved to a city in the gas belt of the state. He lived in Greencastle where Hcber Ellis now lives, on east Seminary street. The lot on which Mr. Pierce’s present home stands on east Walnut street, was once a part of the Brown estate. Mr. Brown was a half-brother of Mrs. Emily Pierce, the mother of Robert L. Pierce, and of Mrs. Martha Ferrand. and he sent for them to come here from Kentucky, during the Civil war, their husbands being in the Union army and they being left alone in their Kentucky homes. Mrs. Ferrand lived in a log cabin south of the house in which Mr. Pierce was born. The father of Mr. Pierce was William Pierce. Harrison Randel, one time auditor j of Putnam county, and a surveyor, acquired the property from Mr. Brown.
