Shower stalls, either as an extra hath or in place of the main bath, are becoming quite popular, Federal Housing Administration officials say. When they are used, wall materials highly resistant to moisture or corrosion and durable waterproof base slabs should be selected. Particular care must be used to prevent serious leaks. A tight joint between the dram and the base slab, periodically inspected for recaulking, is necessary.

Water Softeners In many sections of the country | the water supply contains hard substances which may have a damag- j ing effect on plumbing and water j lines. ; ■ Where such conditions prevail, water softeners may be installed to remove the undesirable and harmful elements. There are a number of different types of water softeners, most of which are eligible for installation under the Modernization Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Administration. Funds for the work are obtainable from lending institutions qualified by the FHA.

Now that the Fall season is at hand in many sections of the country, attention should be given to placing the home in order for approaching Winter. Proper maintenance of the home pajs dividends in comfort and value. Up to $2,r>00 may be borrowed from qualified lending institutions for repairs, alterations, and improvements to properties under the Federal Housing Administration’s Modernization Credit Plan. The above cross-sectional view of a home gives an excellent guide for inspecting the vital parts of the structure. The following numbers and list of items correspond to the numbers above: (1) exterior trim; (2) attic ventilation, attic room; (3) flashings; (4) chimney masonry, cap, elc.; (5) roof; (6) rafters, studding; (7) roof sheathing; (8) dormers; (9) weatherstripping; (10) lath; (11) garage, tool space, workshop, etc.; (12) walks and drives; (13) exterior walls; (14) sheathing and insulation; (15) window frames and sash; (16) blinds, shutters; (17) porch bench, transom, door columns, etc.; (18) steps, brick, wood, concrete, tile, etc.; (19) drain tile; (20) footing: (21) foundation walls; (22) basement floor; (23) recreation room, laundry, workshop, etc.; (21) heating plant; (25) grading and landscaping; (26) gutters, downspouts; (27) modern kitchen; (28) built-in bookshelves, cabinets, cupboards, etc.; (29) joists and subflooring; (30) fireplace, mantel, flue; (31) paint, wallpaper, interior decoration; (32) interior trim: (33) stairways, treads, rails, balusters, etc.; (34) electric fixtures; (35) doors, hardware; (36) plumbing and fixtures; (37) outlets and wiring; (38) flooring, finished lumber, tile, linoleum; etc.; (39) wailhourd, plaster, etc.; (40) closet space, shelves, etc.
NOW IS THE TIME TO LOOK AT HEATING EQUIPMENT The time to inspect and look over heating equipment of your house is right now. If it needs repairs, have it done now. Bear in mind that the saving in fuel which will be made next winter will more than offset the cost of having the flues cleaned of soot. Warped or broken grates, cracked boilers and ill-fitting doors are quite wasteful of fuel, and they
should be repaired.
ted to remain neglected, may prove to be a dangerous fire hazard. Nonmetallic sheeted cable, armored cable, rigid metal pipe, or knob and tube may be used safely in rewiring. Careful check should be made of the light and power equipment in a new home or in modernizing an older structure. In the case of old dwellings, such a check is doubly necessary. The original installations may have become worn or damaged. The services of a competent electrician should be employed to avoid costly mistakes. .
FLFE LINERS PROTECT AGAINST FIRES Flue liners, made of burned fire clay, serve as good protection against fires caused by leaky and sooty chimneys. They may be installed with funds obtainable from qualified lending ..institutions under the Modernization Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Administration. The smooth surface of flue liners will not collect soot. In addition, they are said to improve the draft of the chimney, save fuel, and protect the mortar joints of the brickwork against the destructive action of gases. They are made in both round and rectangular siiapes.

usters.

Reducing Drafts The advent of cold weather will remind many home owners of former discomfort caused by drafty windows and doors. Aside from heat loss, a drafty house is a health hazard. A thorough job of weatherstripping will do much to eliminate this fault and may be accomplished at reasonable cost. The choice of materials is wide, and selection may be governed by the amount of money the home owner desires to put into the improvement. The Modernization Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Administration offers a means of obtaining funds for this improvement. Private lending institutions, qualified by FHA. advance the money needed.

Q. Is it best to place a house nearer the street, nearer the rear property line, or in the center of the lot? A. There is not set rule. The house should be placed on the lot so as to take advantage of the best natural features, such as views, the slope of the land, sunlight, prevailing winds, and shade trees. The location of the house, together with the arrangement of garages, op'’r ' spaces, terraces, landscaping, and walks and drives, should result in a pleasing appearance of the property as a whole. Furthermore, the location of the house should provide sreatest usefulness and convenience. Work has already started on two modified Cape Cod Colonial homes here in Greencastle as building activity in this locality goes forward in i continuous spurt of activity. Both homes nave the new feature of a dinette instead of a dining room and both homes are being built by the Allen Lumber Company with Joe Morris as the architect. A feature at both houses will be the doorways. Instead of the drab old style doorways these will be of a simple design that has a charm of its own. The doors will be paneled and built up so as to look very colonial and will offset the house. The one home is being built on Manhattan Road for Mr. and Mrs. Harold Collins. The home will consist of a living room, dinette, kitchenette, two bedrooms and a bath. Facing th'e house one will see an attached garage on the left while the main section of the house will be balanced; the doorway in the center and a window on either side. This modified Cape Cod Colonial bungalow will have a full basement and there will be hardwood floors
throughout.
The outside of the structure will be covered with 8 inch white pine
bevel siding.
Along the Indianapolis Road, just across from Roscoe Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Artie McNary are starting
