PERU, Ind., Aug. 18 (UP)—John ! N. Cathcart, 53, Peru salesman who

meeting starting ! earlier this week claimed to have

been abducted and taken to St. Louis, committed suicide last night by diverting fumes from the exhaust pipe of his automobile to the inside of the car. His body was found today in the machine, parked about a mile west

of the city,

Cathcart yesterday was given a $50 suspended fine in a St. Louis court where he pleaded guilt to making a false report. He said that he was abducted in Indianapolis Monday by two men and a woman and released in St. Louis Tuesday. His story appeared to bf false after he submitted to a lie detector test and finally he admitted that he had been worried over various troubles and had planned to commit suicide. He said that he lost his nerve and invented the kidnaping story to explain his disappearance. Last night, however, he parked his car, closed the windows and let the engine run until the monoxide fumes proved fatal.
