ARTIST RETURNS PAINTING PARIS, Aug. 14 (UP)—A young artist has returned to authorities the rare Watteau painting, “L’lndifflerent," which was stolen recently from the Louvre, it was announced today. The painter told authorities he took the picture as a “protest" because Louvre authorities committed what he considered an act of vandalism in repair work which they did on the picture. The painter, Serge Bogousslawsky. handed the painting to an examining magistrate in the Law courts. The picture had been missing almost two months, and it had been hunted throughout the world.

Flashing light signals, motorists of approaching

grade intersections, are to be installed at 79 additional crossings, T. A. Dicus, chairman of the State Highway Commission, said today. Similar warning signals have been installed perviously at 315 grade crossings and have contributed to a reduction

in accidents.

Installation of these signals, like those already in operation, will be fi- • anced with federal funds allocated to the State Highway Commission for grade separation, grade crossing i elimination and protection. It is estimated that installation of the signals at the 79 grade crossings will cost approximately $228,000. These signals will be the first to be installed on Indiana highways under new federal regulations which permit the railroads affected to purchase materials, assemble and place the signals. In the past, the commission was required to take bids and award contracts for the furnish-

warning ing of the major materials necessary trains at for assembly and erection of the sig-

nals. Under the new regulations, hills for materials used will be filed with the Highway Commission by

the railroads.

Sixty-seven of the crossings to be protected by the flashing light signals are on state highway routes both inside and outside cities and towns; eight crossings are on city streets which are not state highway routes and the remaining four signals will go on county roads. Twelve of the crossings on the list will have both the lights and short-arm gates which drop as a train approaches the J

intersection.

Crossing included in the present protection program were selected by

| that have been made in astronomical

j history.

The new supernova flared up in a far distant nebula to extraordinary | brilliance, probably hundreds of j thousands of times greater than that

of the sun. he estimated.

The newly discovered outburst is located in the elliptical nebula known as NGG 4621, a member of the Virgo cluster. It is approximately the 15th apparent magnitude, which means that it can be seen only with a powerful telescope, Dr. Zwicky

said.

Past Peak Brilliance Observations indicated that when the new supernova was first seen, it was three weeks past its maximum

brilliance.

Identification of the exploding star

was made from a spectrum obtained

at the Carnegie Institute's

Wilson Observatory.

Dr. Zwicky, who has specialized in the discovery of supernovae, found it during a survey of the space where’ these stars usually are found which he has constantly explored for years. According to Dr. Zwicky, as well as other scientists, the outburst, of a supernova transcends in magnitude all other known physical catastro-

phes.

mendous release of energy within the 'atoms of mutter composing the star. Another suggestion is that novae occur when stars collide. Scientists speculate on what remains of novae when they fade away. One suggestion Is that they become stars consisting of neutrons with no ordinary matter in their makeup. The neutron is one of the basic building block of matter. Such a spent star of neutrons, Dr. Zwicky said, would be extremely dense. The earth’s mass on the same density would be a hall less than two miles in diameter, he estimated.

DIXIE CUPPER SEARCHES FOR LOST OCEAN FLIERS SOUTHAMPTON, England, Aug, 14 'UP)—The Pan American Airways flying boat Dixie Clipper,

yesterday on a regu-

larly scheduled trans-Atlantic flight, spent three hours in a vain search for Alex l,oeb and Dick Decker, New York aviators missing on an attempted St. Peters, N. S.-Ireland flight. When the plane was 600 miles off Ireland it received a radio message reporting that the Loeh-Decker plane was missing. NORTH EASTON, Mass. (UP)—Harvey T. Noyes, self-styled “man of 1950,’’ publicly wears definitely futuristic clothes which he confidently predicts will be all the rage among men-about-town 11 years hence. His ultra modern wardrobe was handsewn by his bride, who followed his instructions in designing clothes primarily for masculine comfort. “There are too many pockets, buttons and creases in the clothes men wear now,” said Noyes. The outfit which created a sensation when he first wore it downtown comprised a wine-red satin blouse, a red corded silk ankle-length cape lined with green taffeta and caught at the throat with a red band, trousers that smacked of the medieval “tights” area and soft leather shoes with one lace which ties across the top. His appearance, conservatively expressed, is colorful as he wanders through the shopping district doing errands for his wife. "People laugh at me,” he said. “But that doesn’t bother me. because I fee! just ns much at home in my new outfit as I did in my other clothes.” Mrs. Noyes now is completing a wardrobe for herself. It is fashioned on the same futuristic principles.
