paneling sometimes gives by showing dark or dead spots after it has been varThis is caused by the varnish in. The best way to prevent first to shellac the wood fchly. This should be followed h ;t two coats of varnish. For

the last coat, use a flat varnish. Some prefer waxed finish for pine. In preparation for this, clean the surface, sandpaper and dust it well. Then seal the pores of the wood with a mixture of denatured aleihol and pure white liquid shellac in the proportion of half and half. If this does not thoroughly seal the surface, remix the sealer, increasing the amount to two parts of shellac to one of alcohol Allow it to dry, then go over with a first quality light floor wax of the paste type, and either .leave a flat finish or burnish as desired wilh a soft cloth when wax is well set.

This rambling home has all of the informality and chann of the popular ranch houses of the Southwest. In spite of the unique design, the arrangement of the rooms is orderly and practical. The two bedrooms are grouped together on one side with the hath, while the other end of the house contains living room, dining room, and kitchen. Built with the aid of a $5,500 mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration, this model was valued at $7,000 by FHA officials.

Just south of the Prevo home in Northwood, on Highfall avenue, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Abrams are building a Southern Colonial home of brick veneer and eight inch white pine siding. The home has many fine features. Looking at it from the front one will see a brick facade with a stucco gable. The doorway will be in the middle of the front wall and between It and the corner will he two oval leaded glass windows. On the second story there will be three windows along the front. The side walls will be of the white pine siding and the roof is of wood shingles. On the first floor there will be a living room, reading alcove, dining room, dinette and kitchen. The living room will have a wood mantle fireplace on the north wall. Over the fireplace there are two panels and the entire room is wood wainscoting. The dining room features built in cabinets at the corners and the dinette nas a wall cabinet and both the cabinet and the walls will be of knotty white pine. The reading alcove will have built in bookshelves and will be wood paneled, probably in Philippine mahogany. Upstairs there will be three bedrooms and a bath as well as a playroom on the south side. The bathroom is to be finished in Keene cement and will have a built in vanity. The home will make one of the most attractive in Northwood when completed. '*he Metzger Lumber Company is supplying all the material and Pitts Brothers are the contractors.

Storage Sparc

Finding space in which to store household necessities during off-sea-son periods when not in active use is one of the most persistent problems to plague the home owner.

ern trend toward making the garage a part of the house itself comes the a ided advantage that children can go to play in the garage without stepping out in the rain. Considerable wear and tear on the home can be saved during had weather if the children have a playroom to which they can go. Mod-

ernization funds are obtainable from qualified lending institutions under the Property Improvement Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Admin-

ist ration.

Kappa House In Sad State

MANY CHWGFS MADE THROUGHOUT KNTIRE SORORITV HOUSE

To be a real beauty, but at the present time in a rather sad state, the Kappa Kappa Gamma house on the DePauw campus is fast being remodeled into the finest house on the campus.

NEW RADIATOR DESIGNS VARY For years the efforts of the heat-

ing industry have been concentrated on the task of making radiators which combine the quality of unohtrusiveness in design with a high degree of heating efficiency; in oth»r i words, a radiator which would be equally acceptable to the housewife

J and the engineer.

On n visit there this week we wen escorted throughout the house and shown many of the changes. The third floor has been enlarged and many .new rooms are being built on so that it will be much larger. On this floor, at the west end, there will be the chapter room for the secret meetings of the sorority The room will he connected with the hall by sliding doors so that they may be thrown open to the guests of the chapter at initiation time. On the second floor there are many changes, the chief one being the placing of a guest suite at the north east corner of the floor. This suite will have three rooms and will be a decided improvement over the old guest room on the main floor. Also on this floor some of the study rooms are being remodeled. On the main floor there are many changes. The old guest room will b' made into a men's lounge and the library is being made lighter with full length windows to help conform with the architecture. The front porch is now being taken away and a terace will take its place. Between the bay windows along the front of the house there will be several long white pillars so that when all the changes arc made it will be a truly Georgian Colonial style building. The committee in charge of the planning and rebuilding are: Mrs. N. C. O'Hair, Mrs. Frank Donner and Mrs. Russell Brown. Interior decorations will refurnish the interior of the sorority; I^slic F. Ayres of Indianapolis is the architect and the Metzger Lumber Company is supplying the materials. Buis isdoin g both the plumbing and the heating.

A large first-floor storeroom or a dry fell-constructed basement offer the readiest answer to this problem. The Property Improvement Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Administration can be used in financing the construction of either a basement or the store-room, provided the latter is actually attached to the house.

Such a general storage space as either of these two rooms would be might well contain: 1. Space for trunks, bicycles, baby carriages and tools. 2. Cabinet tor sewing equipment and accessories. 3. Built-in shelves or drawers for materials. 4. Closet for garments in the making. 5. Cedar storage closet for out-of-season garments. 6 Blanket chest with built-in drawers or shelves. 7. Cupboards for toys and sport equipment. S. Storage space for furniture, etc.
