MAY REVIVE FLORIDA CANAL — President Roosevelt’s emphasis of defense as a vital national Issue may revive in Congress interest in the old Florida ship canal. Proposed course of the canal is shewn in map. The canal was begun in 1935, with stress on commercial advantages gained by shipping saving a day’s run around the treacherous Florida keys. After
$5,400,000 was spent on it, Congress refused another $12,000,000 appropriation and work stopped. Proponents now say that especially in war shipping by way of the canal from the Gulf areas and to and from the Pacific by the Panama Canal would bo protected. Scenes above, top, construction work; center, oitice buildings and, bottom, workmen under army supervision.
