ANDERSON SOFTBALL < U B PLAYS HERE FKUJ. V NKiHT The Anderson Guide Lanin softball team will invade Robe Ann park in this city Friday evening to clash with the Greencastle Coca Colas in a double-header. • The initial game is scheduled for 7:10 o’clock with the night cap at 8:30. Anderson boasts of one of the strongest softball outfits in the state in the Guide Lamp team. Recently the club from Anderson turned back the Greencastle ten, 9 to 2. and the locals will be eager to avenge the

defeat.

Nineteen years ago today, according to the files of the Daily Banner. Lieutenant Maurice Sharp, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Sharp of this city, gave an exhibition of straight and fancy airplane piloting over the Daggy farm north of Greencastle, which was thrilling in its character. It came at a time when the interest of the citizens in any thing pertaining to the great war, then under way, was at its heighth. Lieut. Sharp enlisted in the aviation service in May, 1917, and was the first officer of the United States volunteers to complete his training in aviation and receive his commission His training was received at ; the Wilbur Wright aviation school at j Dayton, Ohio. Lieut. Sharp was discharged from i the army March 21, 1919, but. after the signing of the armistice, he was | an aviation instructor at the Loce Field, at Dallas. Tex. His death occurred in 1919, following an opera- j

lion.

In its account of the exhibition Lieut. Sharp gavij nineteen years ago. the Daily Banner said: "Lieut Maurice A. Sharp, Greencastle’s brilliant young aviator, thrill led Putnam county people Sunday afternoon with the most perfect exhibition ever seen by nearly all of the thousands who saw him make tlv flight from Daggy field. Sunday afternoon. "Lieut. Sharp, riding alone in thr Curtis training plane which he drove here from Waco. Texas, left the ground shortly after two o'clock and remained in the air for more than me and one-half hours. During that time he showed hia fellowtownsmcn all the tricks of flying which he has lep.ned in more than a year’s training. The unanimous verdict of the people who saw him was that 'Sharpie' is some aviator.’’ "The crowd was estimated between five and ten thousand. Every available point of vantage was occupied by people for the exhibition. "Sunday morning, Lieut. Sharp gave his machine a final tryout. He flew over the field and the city just, before noon. During this time he had as his compainions Capt. Will H. Graham. Lieut G. Will Conklin. Sergeant C. D. Conklin, and Elmer Vancleave, Jesse E. Airhart, and Frank

feet. From that lofty point he began his thrilla, which caused the people to hold their breath. He did the barrel roll, tail spin, side slio. falling leaf, Immalin turn, loop the loop, nose dives, vertical eights, and every other stunt which are familiar to the experienced and highly ef-

ficient American aviators."

with his government and reports wu'o widely circulated that China has offered Russia widespread concessions in return for Soviet military assistance in her war with Japan. The ambassador left the airport at Wuhu, fifty miles southwest of this capital, shortly before it was bombed by Japanese planes which raided a dozen cities in the Nanking area throughout yesterday, killing or wounding scores of additional Chi-

nese civilians.

He left Nanking late Monday night and boarded his plane at Wuhu shortly after dawn. He is flying over the new air lino between Nanking and Moscow opened a month ago and should reach the Soviet cap-

ital within four days.

Reports that he will submit a Chinese proposal to the Russian government for a general Chinese-Russian military pact could not be confirmed Diplomats however, were Inclined a j v( , to believe they were correct and pointed to these facts to substantiate

them:

1. Russia has announced that she will fight to protect her control of Outer Mongolia, menaced by the penetration of Japanese armies into Inner Mongolia, northwest of Peiping. 2. Russian military and economic penetration of China’s sparsely settled Northwest stands to bo eliminated if the Japanese push into this region is continued. 3. The Chinese government has made peace with the Chinese Communist Party, which now is incorporated in Generalissimo Chiang KaiShek’s all-China anti-Japanese front. 4. The Chinese-Soviet nonaggression treaty announced by Nanking aim Moscow last month cleared the way for further agreements.
