There was a deep haze of smoke frwn smouldering houses and wheat fields all over the area, fired Saturday by Nationalist ineendiaiy bombs. By the time the sun rose over the haze the ■ battle. Cavalry on both sides joined in support of infantry, the Loyalists men of the Itth division, the Nationalists Moors on their arched-necked arab horses. They fought all day. Last night the Loyal,st lines noith of Brunete broke in face of a terrific attack sunnorted by tanks artillery and airplanes. This pushed back the apex of the Loyalist salient.

Wlien Kiley Cume Here James Whitcomb Riley, who appeared on the platform of Meharry Hall in this city on a number of occasions, is credited with having figured in an incident during his young manhood at Greenfield which is suggestive of several others which were ascribed to him. That time, he was working as a sign painter, putting business ads on fences of that locality. On one occasion, we are told, he came to a fence on which a religiously inclined farmer had sought to stir the spiritual life of passers by by painting this text: “What shall I do to be saved?” Riley, happening along with his paint brush and under contract with a drug company, painted under the

The marriage of Miss Mary White, DePauw 1927, and Robert Horn, was solemnized at the home of the bride near Dana Saturday evening. The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Horn of Indianapolis, and the bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. E . O. White. The ceremony was pronounced by the Rev. G. H. Reedy, pastor of the Dana Methodist church. The bride taught last year in the Indianapolis public schools. She is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Mr. Horn attended Cornell university. and is a member of Sigma Chi Epsilon. He is associated with his father in the Washington Floral shop at Indianapolis. The bridal couple are taking a honeymoon trip in Canada.

However, in 1881, the Banner contained this item about him: “A large audience gathered at the college last evening to hear recitations by J. W. Riley. He was taken suddenly sick after leaving the hotel and was unable to reach the hall.” On another occasion, when he was billed to appear on the Meharry Hall platform in company with Eugene Fields (1 think it was) Riley came onto the platform ill and was finally compelled to retire, and when, about 1905, the writer of this item, as manager of the college entertainments billed Riley for an appearance in Meharry Hall, many of the tickets were bought on a “money back” agreement, so unreliable had Mr.
