WEEVIL I-AR\ VK ABl NDANT IN CXOVERS THIS YELK LAFALETTE Ind.—From many places in Indiana reports are being received of clover leaf weevil abundance and destructiveness according to J. J Davis, head of the entomology department of the Puriue University Agricultural Experiment Station. The larvae of this weevil which <io the damage are not uncommon in clover fields every year but this year they are unusually abundant sufficiently so to cause alarm This situation is probably due to the coci season which has prevented the development of the fungus disease which normally destroys large num-
bers of the larvae
The larvae are small, light green robust, legless worms, which eat the foliage, usually eating out areas from the edge of the leaf They feed at night and normally are to be found in the crown of the plant or on the ground during the day. They will complete their ievelopments by early June and spin oval-like cocoons in wnich they pupate emerging as adult beetles later in the season There is but one generation a year and l and they damage clover and alfalfa | only in the spring usually during John B les portrays an architect May. In normal years the larvae are destroyed in numtvrs by a fungus dis-
