STREAMS IMPROVER BY LOW DAMS STOCKED WITH BASS Scores of steams, improved by the construction of low dams during recent months, are being stocked with black bass from the state fish hatch- i cries, it was reported today by Virgil M. Simmons, commissioner of the Department of Conservation. More than forty thousand bass have al- r ready been planted in such streams. Construction of low dams in the smaller creeks and streams was sponsored by the Department of Conservation more than two years ago i with the cooperation of FERA and later, WPA. Since that time approximately 2,500 dams have been comolcted as an aid In water conserva- | Mon. The program is being contin- j ued with, several hundred requests for dtirhs rtled with WPA authorities. Lists of streams in which dams have been completed are being compiled by counties and where there is a sufficient flow of water to support fish, bass will be planted as a future source of fishing. Streams which dry up during the summer or which have an insufficient flow, will not be stocked this year. Stocking of the streams and pools formed by the low dams in the south ; half of the state is being done from the Riverside and Avoca state fish hatcheries. A similar program is being carried on in the northern part of the state with fish from Bass Lake. Wawasee and Tri-Lakes hatcheries. In addition a number of plants are being made in the smaller tributaries of the larger streams, such as the Tippecanoe River. The bass being planted this month \vill have a good chance to survive and attain a length of ten to twelve incncs by the opening of the fishing season next year. In addition, the early plants will leave more room in the hatchery ponds for the remainder of the big hatch of game fish reported this year.
