GAVE SONATA KECITAL Prof. Herman Berg, violinist, and Robert Sheldon, pianist, of the university music school faculty, gave a sonata recital. Tuesday evening. The program was an unusually interesting one. consisting of a Sonatine by the contemporary Mexican composer Chavez, the Cesar Franck Sonata and the Richard Strauss Sonata. The Chavez proved to be quite modem in idiom and very clever music; its gejiuine worth must, of course be determined by future judgment which will have the advantage of perspective. The Franck is one of the great works in its field; and the Strauss one of the early works by its composer, perhaps a bit over-sen-timental, but still an extremely effective and imposing work. Throughout the performance a very successful ensemble was achieved, together with an interpretation of sensitive ami genuinely musical distinction. Which is a tribute to both the artists. Mr. Berg’s exceptionally fine tone on his newly acquired Guadagnlni violin was a feature of the recited.
