With a pillared portico over lookin ' the winding Ohio River and an intimate picture of family life in the stately ante-bellum days reflected by the original furnishings, the Lanier Memorial at Madison possesses an appeal to the most casual visitor. The home is open to visitors daily throughout the year. Established in 192G as a memorial to James F. D. Lanier, whose personal fortune was twice placed at the disposal of the struggling young Hoosier state in times of financial stress, the Lanier Home is nationally known for its architectual beauty and the authenticity of its furnishings. Photographs and articles featuring the mansion ate included in many publications on notable American homes.

The home was designed for James Franklin Dougherty Lanier by Frant is Costigan, one of the leading architects of the period, and completcd in 1844. In architecture the Lanier home has been classed as an excellent illustration of the classic revival that appeared and grew during the early part of the nineteenth century. The interior finishings, aside from the massive doors and casings, have a special interest for the builder and worker in v/oods. Mouldings, panels, beads and mitres, the “egg and dart" ornamentation, the fluting on the great pillars and their elaborate Corinthian capitals were executed by skilled bands guiding tools even the names of which are almost forgotten. DEPAUW CHAPEL “One of the marks of an educated man is faithfulness, fidelity, and integrity,” declared President Wildman in DePauw university’s Tuesday morning chapel service. Although there is a great difference of opinion as to what constitutes an educated man, it is a very superficial definition which leaves the moral out, according to the

speaker.

“Our Wry lives depend upon the fidelity of the universe and nature which we call uniformity. Without it there would be complete chaos,” said Dr. Wildman. Pointing put that the trouble with many students is they worship at the shrine of “I Got By,” the speaker insisted that fidelity of detail in the face of humdrum tasks is necessary. “If there isn’t a certain fidelity which runs through all our work we

are not truly educated,” Dr, 1 man said in conclusion.
