ADDIS ABABA, (UP)— Among the many criminals awaiting trial in the Addis Ababa jail is Bala Hu, giant umbrella carrier of the cx-Em-peror Haile Selassie. Six feet, ten inches in height. Bala Hu was the tallest soldier in the Ethiopian army and had been chosen by Selassie to carry his red silk umbi lln during official ceremonies because of his exceptional height. About four years ago Bala Hu was dlagged in chains before the emperor with a group of bndits captured while plundering villages on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. His exceptional height caused Selassie to free the culprit and immediately appoint him ‘Imperial Umbrella Carrier of the Lion of Judah.” When Selassie fled to French Somaliland as the Italian army advanced on the capital, Bala Hu was left behind. He immediately had his band players exchange their musical instruments for rifles and spears and they started looting the city. All were arrested by Italian authorities and jailed. Rumors immediately spread among the natives that Bala Hu had been placed before a firing squad during the night because of his imposing title of Imperial Umbrella Carrier. These rumors, published abroad, have been denied by the prison warden, who informed the viceroy of Bala Hu’s exceptional appetite. In his report to Gen. Rodolfo Graziani the prison warden said Bala Hu has been eating double rations daily for the last three and a half months, and that although he is quiet and \v< 11 behaved prisoner, it would be wise to speed the giant’s trial, as his presence in the capital's jail weighs considerably on the prison’s budget.

sounded. Guards stepped forward hurriedly and “frisked” a chubby, in-nocent-appearing visitor. The men who removed the snubnosed automatic pistol from within the fat man’s clothing had taken their warning from the prison weapon detector an electric device which unerringly spots the person attempting to enter the prison bearing concealed weapons. The detector U’,0.000 installation is being made at Menard prison has been used at Stateville and the old prisons for more than a year. Officials explain its workings this way: “Any package carried by a visitor is placed on a glass-topped table Should the package contain a gun, knife or other weapon or the smallest kind of steel saw, tber is a warning electric flash and the sound of a bell. “Every visitor who appears to have no concealed weapons or tools after he or she is searched is requested to discard any Iron or steel object from his pocket. He is then directed to walk through a doorway. If he has
a revolver, knife or other forbidden object concealed, there is an electric flash and the sound of a gong as he stops through the doorway. “A device something like a telephone receiver and attached by an insulated wire to a telephone box Is then moved ovc - the clothing of the suspected visitor. When the receiver passes over contraband metal there is another ring and a flash. “Women visitors have been detected with concealed stilettos although they previously had been searched by a woman inspector.

Cone, who will become governor of Florida next year, has suggested to federal authorities a plan for transfer of drought-impoverished families to Florida. This state, in contrast with the Midwest, has had an excess of rainfall this year. Cone believed the state would finance a share of the expense needed to permit Midwestern farmers to rehabilitate themselves in new surroundings here. “We have millions of acres of idle la nil in Florida, and I see no reason why these unfortunate people should not be advised tof our resources,” lie 8aid - IMPERSONATION NOT FALSE MONTREAL, (UP) Ernest Prevent was acquitted here on a charpc of impersonating himself.
