OFF IN' BRITAIN LONDON iUP'—The British Ministry of Pensions hopes to finish paying for its share of the cost of the World War by 1955—41 years after its outbreak. Last year the gross expenditure of| the Ministry of Pensions was $217,000.000 for war pensions and compensation allowances to 1.006.000
persons.
Since 1918 the Ministry has spent $675,000,000. and more than onefourth of that sum has been used for food, clothing, and education for war orphans. In 1921. the peak year, the ministry paid out $.700,000,000 It.
pensions.
At the end of the war there were 67 ministry-controlled hospitals foi disabled soldiers. Now there are 10 and a few clinics for out-patients. “In a few years time,' 1 an official at the ministry said, "only $5,000,000 a year should be needed for pensions. And it is estimated that the ministry may finish its work by 1955.” One of the saddest facts in the figures is that mere than 6.000 officers and men are certified insane. More than 10,000 fighting men are undergoing treatment in hospitals and are not able to leave, although there are still hopes that they will be cured. In 1921, 17.780 hospital beds were used. Today only 7.200 beds are needed in hospitals controlled by the
ministry.
Once there were 260,000 war widow receiving sponsions. Today the figure is reduced to 174,415, 120,000 of them having remarried.

Voneastle Ross Alexander and Peverly P.oberts have tne leading parts in “Hot Money," showing at the Voneastle tonight. The picture deals with the high pressure, wild cat promotion schemes that were foisted on a gullible public in the days of easy money. In this instance it is the promotion of a liquid conoen'rate which mixed with water, will form a gasoline that will run an automobile at a cent a gallon. Alexander plays the part of the fast talking oromotor and Miss Roberts is his secretary, who falls in love with him. Joseph Cawthom is the “front money” for the scheme.

1NDTANA POLIS, Sept. 3.—With a thrill packed race holding the atton- j tion of all American Association ! league fans, and with Indianapolis battling desperately for a nlace in the first division and post season play-off series, Hoosier fans anxiously awaited the return of the Indians to Perry Stadium next Saturday night to begin the windup series of five games with the rival Louisville
Colonels.
The Milwaukee Brewers appear to have the pennant for the regular season schedule cinched as they enter i the last lap of the race with a six and a half game lead over St. Paul who, at the time this is written, holds the second place berth by a slight
margin over Kansas City.
But the daily game results have been changing the complexion of the A A race insofar as the second, third, fourth and fifth places are concerned. The Indianapolis and Minneapolis clubs are providing real thrills for the fans as the two clubs battle neck and neck for a first division berth. St. Paul gave the pace setting Milwaukee Brewers a series of tiouncings the past week-end and while it appears the Prewers are “In,” still it is mathematically possible for them to lose out and even more so when one considers the pennant winner gets a bonus of $4,000. The fact the second place club gets a bonus of $2,000 has St. Paul, Kansas City, Indianapolis and Minneapolis each with a chance of capturing j.-j',' the runnerup berth, on eJge for the !
