A proposal for a cable-car route to the summit Juis been rejected. The Home Office, oposing the project, declared that such a railroad would mar the beauty of the mountain and have an adverse effect on Japan’s national health. The reasoning behind the second idea was that a railway would induce laziness and deprive many climbers .if the healthful exercise necessitated by the climb. One report was that a series of iinonymous threats had been made to bomb a railway if one were built. The newspaper Jiji understood the reported threats influenced the Home

Sonntag, 77, former Evansville banker and chairman of the Indiana world war memorial commission, died of a heart attack yesterday. Sonntag was a lifelong resident of Evansville. He was instrumental in organization of the American Trust and Savings bank here in 1904. In 1911 he was named {director of the Ohio State National Banft and served as vice president of the American Rankers Association in 1912. For two years Sonntag was national councilor of the Indiana Bankers Association and he served as president of the organization in 1913 and 1914. i

Meridian are tne parents of a son born Wednesday morning. Glenn Jr. and Betty Summers, Elm street have returned home after a visit with relatives in Indianapolis. Lester Wells of this city who is confined to the Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis, is reported improving. " ir Mr. and Mrs. Glenn M Summers, who have been attending the American Legion convention at Muncie, have returned home. Born Tuesday to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Branch of Waukesha, Wis., a daughter. Mrs. Braneh was formerly Miss Mary Louise Evans. Alva Bryan suffered painful injuries when he cut his right hand in an electrie fan at his home Monday. It required several stitches to close
the wound.
Harold Comer, 16 year old Bainbridge high school boy, pleaded guilty this morning to a charge of public intoxication. He was fined $5.00 and costs in the court of R. H Newgent, justice of the peace. Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Frank Smith, a former Bainbridge and Crawfordsville resident, at tne Methodist hospital in Indianapolis, following a operation. Her husband was at one time the proprietor of a Crawfordsville restaurant. She was Miss Martha Cox of Bainbridge before her marriage. Burial will be at the Brick Chapel
cemetery.

There were eighty members of the Hammond family an 1 four friends present. The morning was spent in greeting relatives, at the dinner hour a long table was spread with many id things to eat, which was greatly cnoyed by all. In the afternoon there were plenty of ice cream served. The men and boys played Soft ball and horse shoe. Those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mathews from Danville, 111.; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dunkin from Champaign III.; Mrs. Cy Gillespie and children from Chicago.
