IN VIENNA

VIENNA. (UP 1 —Vienna’s rapidly sinking biithrate seems to indicate this ancient city is facing a slow death. While in 1909 the number of deaths was 32.498 compared to 41.690 births, the corresponding figures for 1935 were 24.25 i and 10.350. Before the war. an average of about 20.000 couples were married each year The number of marriages which for obvious reasons, had shrunk to insignificance during the war. reached record figures in the first post-war years. In 1920. no fewer than 31,164 marriages were conclude 1 in Vienna. Since then the number has slumped from year to year; in 1925 there were 17.410 marriages. 16,043 in 1929; 14.850 in 1932; 13.687 in 1933, and only 13,211 in 1934. With 13,418 marriages in 1935. for the first time since 1920, showed again a slight increase. Because of the anti-religious tendency of Continental European Socialism many thousands cf Viennese left the Komana Ctholic Church Into which they had been born under the red regime. The anti-religious wave reached Its peak in 1927, when 28.8.37 persons resigned fn in the Catholic Church in Vienna.

WEST PLAINS. Mo. 'UP'—What the well dressed woman wore a hundred years ago. and how she carded, spun and wove it herself, before fashioning it to the styles of that day, will be Missouri's contribution to the Texas Centennial

celebration.

Unmindful of the speed of today, Mrs. Cinderella Kinnaird, 82-year old descendant of colonial aristocracy, fosters the art of spinning and weaving handed down to her from Revolutionary generations. At the Dallas pageant the West Plains woman will display her craft. Her nimble fingers will work cotton. flax and woo! from the rawstate into beautiful cloth on wheels and looms, in a manner she learned as a child in Kentucky from her mother. Garbed in a voluminous dress of 1830 vintage, Mrs. Kinnaird will spin before two large handmade American flags, designed after the exact manufacturing pattern of Betsy Ross. She is the great-great-grand-daughter of Edmond Pehdleton. colonial statesman from Virginia, who as a friend of George Washingten was seated at the First Continental Congress. Her father was related to Jeff Davis. Mrs. Kinnaird's collection of spinning wheels is her greatest joy today. and modestly she points to a small flax wheel and says her "mother's great grandfather purchased that from Martha Washington's personal property.”
