Softball fans were treated to some heavy hitting last night, as the Merchants slugged their way to a 13 to 4 victory over Zinc Mill, and Kroger nosed out Rotary, in an extra inning slugfest. 17 to 16. In the opening game, the Merchants grabbed an early lead, scoring eleven runs in the first three innings off of Hammond, Zinc Mill pitcher, and were never headed. Messersmith, Merchant pitcher, injured his leg sliding into second base in the third 'inning, and had to be replaced by Stites who held the Zinc Mill team to a single hit in the last four innings. Dunivan slammed out a homer for the Zinc Mill, and Crawley dashed in from the Merchant’s shortfield to make a diving shoestring catch which ended the game. Neither Sellers, Kroger pitcher, or Carmichael, who twirled for Rotary, was effective in the final tilt, as both teams went on a hitting rampage. At the end of seven innings the game was tied at 16 to 16. but in the extra inning Kroger shoved across a run. while holding the Rotarians scoreless. to win 17 to 16. Rotary turned in a snappy triple play in the first inning to cut short a Kroger rally. Friday 7:30 State Highway vs. Fillmore Specials (Federal League) R-30 Rusesllville vs Putnamville (County).
