ITALY PI MINS MILLIONS INTO NEW MOVIE (ENTER outside rome: ROME 'UP' Mussolini’s “Italian Hollwood,” which Italians hope will make Rome the world’s new movie center, is taking concrete form. The first units of the new movie city some six miles outside of Rome aie under construction and will be dedicated April 21. 1937, by their chief inspirer, Premier Benito Mussolini. The hold project to spend some $10 000 000 in the construction of. an italiun "movie city” is only one phase in Mussolini’s campaign to. make llaly one of the world's chief produc ’ is of screen entertainment. In various wavs the government is [lumping millions of dollars yearly in to the encouraj einent of Italian pic inn i and when Hie new plant is completed the goverment hopes to icap its reward in world cinema pres lige. The plans of Gino Peressutti, archi tect of the nev. cinema city, call for more than 30 buildings where var ions Italian companies will produce their pictures. V arious studios and technical offices will be spread ovet an area of si-veial miles square The initial cost of the undertaking is estimated at 120 million lire, or near ly $10,000 000. Italian companies and the Italian government jointly aie putting up the money. Tlie government also has prepared for tlie day when Italian companies will he producing on a large scale by establishing a "film credit fund" with the National Labor Bank, which will lend money to producers on advan tageous terms The government is putting 20 million lire into this fund and the National Labor Bank is pro vidiiig a similar sum These funds will be made available to producers whose project'' I pictures are approved by the Ministry of Press and Propaganda. Producers who get government approval can get up to 60 per cent of the total estimated cost ui t lie picture. With one of the world’s most modern studios placed at their disposal and with ample credits, the Italian movie industry within a year or sc should be in a position to compete with othci countries for tlie world market. Just as soon as the Italian companies start stepping up their production it is expected the government will drastically restrict tin* number of foreign films allowed to circulate in Italy At present the United States furnishes about 65 per cent of the films shown in Italy. According to Italian law. all foreign films must be "dubbed" in Italian studios. There are nine such studios at present transforming American, British French and German pictures into Italian dialogue F-oreign films cannot be shown in their original language although an exception is made for one theater in Rome as a courtesy to foreign diplomats and visitors. At present Italian companies are producing only about 30 pictures yi al ly, or about one-tenth of the nation's annual demand. When the new movie city is completed it is predicted production wil be tripled the first year and re-tripled the second year it is considered highly possible several American companies, to avoid Italian restrictions, will form Italbyi iimipanies and make films in the new i inema city.
