NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY The rain whipped down In driving torrents. Lightning flashed over the open countryside. Thunder rolled. And it was doggone wet! Too wet. Despite Whitey's efforts, the rain poured througii every crack and trevice of the crotchety old roof. "Hey, Boss!" yelled Whltey as he

"Race? You're Insane' Want to kill him? Wouldn't do any good anyway He hasn't the energy to run around a track " Alice kneeled down by the horse's head. "He looks so pathetic " "May be some time," said the doctor, "before that horse runs." "How about Saturday. Doc? He’s got to run Saturday That's the big race. I've got him entered." "Saturday?" The veteri nary shrugged. "Don't know. Animals are very funny Sometimes snap out of it just like that " he snapped his fingeis other times—well —don't take him out until the fever disappears And 1 wouldn't work him too hard, even then. Rest him until the last minute." Alice, stroking the horse's head, spoke throatily. "Voti ve got to get well, 'Bill. You've got to win the race. If you don't " She sobbed.

"Oh. 'Bill'."

The doctor pave a last bit of advice. "Don't forget No food. Carrots. maybe. If he'll take It I doubt it. though. They won't eat when

press agent ry seen here in years. When Hie bill was first introduced in the house the publicity men for the hanking interests handed reporters "digests" of the bill with the ."omment that the measure contained ‘only minor amendments to clarify” the 19S3 hanking act. When the bill passed the house, the publicists announced it "would release $2.0.10,000 in frozen assets" in Indiana hanks. When the measure was well on its way toward passage in the senate, the press agents stepped the figure up to "between .$3,000,000 and $4,000.000." Strict facts of the case are that j the bill will enable Indiana hanks to "re-finar.co” more than $200 000,000 wfcrth of uncollectable mortgages, either by renewing them or cashing them in with the Federal Housing Administration at Washington. The authority for the true figure is R. JCarl Peters, Indiana head of the housing administration. Now that the eat is out of the hag. the hankers’ press agents do not deny that “maybe” they had their estimates low. But, they point out, they could j not afford to have the heat turned on j Ilia measure with the present public 1 attitude toward banks. Some of the newcomers to the general assembly are discovering that a knowledge of parliamentary tricks gathers no moss. House Judiciary A had a divided report on H. B. 102 which would outlaw deficiency judgments on mortgage foreclosures. Twelve of the committee signed a majority report to kill the bill. The thirteenth member, George W. Wolf. Derm, of Peru, signed a minority report for passage. Wolf took the floor and in an impassioned speech persuaded the liouse to substitute his report, thus saving the bill. Opponents of the measure sat silent. Ten seconds later, the Judiciary A rommittee reported H. B. 68 and H. D. 120 out for non-passage. The house adopted the recommendations. Their actions. Wolf later discovered killed H. B. 102. Reason: All three bills were on identical subjects. The house rules provide that once a bill has been killed its subject matter may not be considered in any other hill during the session. i Those who watch Governor Paul V McNutt day in and day out wonderhow he maintain the terrific pace he sets for himself. His average day begins at 9 a. m. three hours of office routine follows more often than not a luncheon a.I(Iress is scheduled, hack to the office for more work, then a flying trip to make an evening address, or an airplane dash to some distant outstat. city. If there aro no speeches schedu'od, the governor often works far into the evening, having only the janitor to bid goodnight when he leaves Physically he is in perfect condition. 6 feet. 1 inch tall, weighing 200 pounds, and he has learned the stunt ol sleeping any time he gets a chance, often in an automobile jogging over county roads or in a plan, suffering from what aviators call air bumps Loss And Less About More Arjd More: Arthur L Trester. the big stick in the Indiana High School Athhtic Association, is little concerned about the promised legislative probe of his regime . . Trester has been r -aring grunts and groans for fifteen years . . . Nothing comes of them . . . The Indiana house spent more than a week in session without a flag displayed . . . Jake Reisinger, the Evansville solon, caught it and 200 square feet of stars and stripes now grace the speaker's dias . . . Lenhardt Bauer, Democratic caucus chairman In the house is 24 . .
