plosion of a huge gasoline tank which followed a fire claimed the lives of at least three persons, two of them firemen, at the Richfield oil tank farm [
today.
Despite reports that the bodies of | five firemen and one spectator ha I been found, coroner David Lincoln anti unced only three were known dead. lie .-aid he would open an investigation tomorrow. Twenty-two persons were burne so severely that they were forced to remain in the city’s two hospitals for treatment. The condition of five of them, including Fire Chief Clifton Beatty, was reported critical. At least 20 other persons received treatment for minor hums. The known dead were Oscar Ii- Bloom and Walter Ivastenhuber, firemen nnd Henry Golleiinski, 18 years old, a spectator. A crow I of about 500 persons had gathcied near the oil farm to watch fire licit fight what at first appeared to he a small blaze. The flames spread rapidly and about 20 minutes later on of the three gasoline tanks on the faint P\ii>loded. Spectators alii firemen alike were . howered with burning oil. The cries f men, women an I children mingle! with the shrieking sirens of ambul-
ances.
Doctor- and nurses from nearby towns were summoned to aid the ho - pital staffs. Firemen within a 30-mile radius of Jami stown assisted in fighting the flames. They were n ported umVr control at 7 p. m- The cause of the fire was not definitely known, but it was reported it was- caused by a spark which flashed when an electric switch was pulled.
