Revel had marked Hie spots where 1 the various policemen had been murdered. Connor grabbed the map out of their hands. "That clinches It, sir!” said the excited Padgct. The door opened slowly and Jane frenshani confronted them. “Jane!” cried her father aghast. “What are you doing here!” Connor and the detectives pushed
past Jane as she went quiekly to her father. “Please, father, don't ask me anything now.” She was all hut lobbing openly. Sir Herbert put his

Connor, Willis and several of the detectives quickly trouped hack into the hallway where Sir Herbert still

Revel, in his policeman’s uniform, crossed the street towards the warehouse side anil when he came t.> the sidewalk turned towards the blind end of the alley like street, assuming >ho rolling gait of a carrfree copper. Palmer watched him in awed fascination. Revel was whistling a gav tune as he stopped In front of a battered sign on the side of the warehouse which read: This warehouse to let. Pour stories, 420,000 cubic feet. Address inquiries to Edgar Pyson & sons, Agents. Still whistling. Revel walked on until he was |iarallrl with a barred win-low on the ground floor level. The bottom of the window was about three and half feet above the side
walk.
Suddenly Revel leaped away from the building towards the sidewalk curbing and swung about, raising his hulls eye lantern and flashing its beam upon the window He eaughl a momentary glimpse of a distorted, maniacal face glaring down at him from the lower right hand corner ot the window. Resting on the window sill was the steel point of a sword which gleniued in the light beam. So quiekly were both face and sword point gone thnt Revel, if he had not been expecting to meet X at this spot, would have thought his eyes had deceived him. Revel ran his eyes along the front of the building ami saw the mam door of the warehouse but two or three rods farther along. He wenl rapidly to it and flashed his lantern on the lock of the maastve, wooden double doors. The old fashioned lock, with )it» keyhole several inches^ high, wat forged of wrought iron. With re volver drawn, Revel bent down t< examine the key hole until his chescovered it. Immediately a long, thii blade, like a silver serpent, leapet out through the keyhole and struc) Revel ia the chest, over the heart.
