WASHINGTON, Ind., Nov. 40, (UP)—A municipally owned electric plant is earning the major portion of this city* ghl against depres-
sion.
Primarily, the revenue from the electric plant, tales of which are among the lowest in the state, has permitted reduction of the city tax rate from ! 12 on $100 property valuation to II cents, in three years. E,nthused 1 the successful operation of th electric plant, the city has purchased its own waterworks and street railway system. All surplus, water revenue is laving used to pay for the $000,000 plant lamght last year. After the debt is retired, in about 10 or 15 years, the surplus revenue from the two utilities is expected to operate the city's government without a tax levy. The street railway system makes no profit Imt is operated for conven-
ience.
The cleeiric plant was bought by the , it> •IJHMI at a nominal .cost. Since (Gi inprovements have been made and now has an investment value of 'uoo.OnO. The tav dixtions were made possible by u g $40,((po annually from the light plant revenue for ,iteration of the cii\ government. This year, $90,000 wa- transfemvl from the light plant the geneial fund. • Despiti the depression revenue from the plant has continued to increase. f’lufit last year was $121,000. As a result city officials have secured pernn-sion to reduce electricity rates by approximately $20.<H)ti annually nevt year. UK.41 >( litH)L SI I DEN IS MUIRESSED BY DEAN DIRKS I '' an J .u, II.
