Ted Wynne left hi* position in the Btllport steel mill to work his way through Old Dominion College so he might be the equal of the wealthy Barb Roth. He succeeds creditably. Coach Barney Mack makes him a quartet back on his nationally known Blue Comets The first year they lose one game only, for which Tom Stone, Tad's rival in love and football, blames Ted. Barb break* an appointment waith Ted in favor of Tom. Hurt, Ted-decides to teach her « lesson and ignores her. In the company of beautiful Rosalie Downs, Ted forgets Barb for « while, but back at school she holds his thoughts. Softened by u summer of forced leisure and after-effects of a hand infection, Ted is not in his usual form. The team is alao handicapped by the absence of Captain Jim Davia due to an injury. They are defeated by the Navy.

CH AP TER XXV Bearing down for Illinois. Grimly digging in. Ted worked on his Kgs all week—baked them; soak' d them in the hot whirlpool; worked out gingerly, nursed them. Before they had just been leg-; now they were important items in the success or failure of New Dominion’s sea-
son.
Barney took no chances. He started lot liist eleven. It was a confession of weakness—but lie couldn't take a rhance on letting the lllinii git awav to a bouchdown lead the way the Navy had done. When a li'.un started to smell the headlines which came from beating New Dominion, they got very hot. The thing to do was stay On top of them—the myth of invincibility wax a part of Barney’s system Which it was dangerous to shatter. It was win one game at a time this year, and let the future rake care of itself. “F’lav safe,’’ Barney instructed Ted "Hang on for the breaks if it takes all day—and save yourself. Run thr punts out of hounds; fair cat'll them If you get bv today, another week will fix you up" It was a drab game from a spectator’s viewpoint but a tough defensive battle. The fall shuttled between the twenty-yard lines during the first half. Midway in the thiid period an lllinii punt went straight in the air and Sheets downed it in midfield. ’’Lei’s go,” Pat shouted. There was 'hatter all alone the Tine. It wa* the break they had been waiting for; Illinois knew it and stiffened its back to rrsi.-t the offrn-

Old slufl—except Harry Hulbrrt. He was never old stuff—even Barney had a gn.it weakness for Harry Hulbert. He had been Bariiey’a greatest star. “You'd think these birds played." Ted said; and then was a»i.ry. Somebody recognized tlum and started a cheer—a drunken cheer; but the old grad* meant all right.
