At Soviet Stratosphere Ascent
A scene at Moscow air field as the Soviet stratostat, U. S. S. R., commanded by George Prokofiev (above), started the climb to the stratosphere that broke all previous records by attaining an altitude of 11.8 miles. Note that the bag seems but partly inflated. This is to allow for gas expansion in the sun. The balloon came back to earth 31 miles from Moscow with valuable stratosphere data.
