HAVANA, Oct. 2 (UP)—A pitched fight broke out today between army enlisted men and hundreds of officers encamped at the National hotel on the Malecon. Firing started at 6:10 a. m. Soon it became intense, and by 6:45 there was heavy rifle and machine gun fire. By 7 o’clock the enlisted men were fiirng on the hotel with two threeinch field guns plated along the 1 Malecon and the gunboat Patria, which steamed to the waterfront facing the hotel, was preparing to go into action.
