of the statutes), a figure far below that of other senators, but enough with his private measures to give him the blue ribbon for quantity. Others were not far behind. Assistant floor leader Senator McNary, Repn., Ore., introduced 223 bills, Senator Copeland, Dem., N. Y , 207 and Senator Jones Repn., Wash. 195. It is an almost impossible task to est number of house bills. More than a dozen members were well beyond any total that the senate could pro- | duce and rumor had it that one congressman achieved 500. The session, then, produced 17,991 bills, not to mention resolutions, joint ! resolutions and concurrent resolutions
in large numbers.
The more fantastic bills never got bey- nd the committees.
They included:
A bill to extend the immigration quota laws to foreign born lobsters j by prohibiting the entry of all those- j who do not live up to certain definite specifications as to size. A biil to refinance the farm indebt ; (“lines.- of the nation at one and onehalf per cent, and to continue the j proces. until the average money in eir ulation was $75 per person. A bill to grant the federal farm board more than $2,000,000,000 for stabilization operations.

DICKENS* NAMES SECRET REVEALED BY CHURCH
LONDON, (UP)—One of the prob- ; lent.-, which have always fascinated lovers of Charles Dickens’ work is tnat of where he got the names of his characters. It is slowly being solved by the verger of a London i church. It was long thought that Dickens, out of his own imagination, had coined s-ich surnames as Chadbaml, Tigg, Guyy, Marley, Dorrit, Mold, Varden, and Boffin, hut these very names have been found in the parish record of St. Andrew’s church, Holborn, where the verger, A. Jones, has jotte I them down for many years in the (ourse of his normal work. Jones thus far has listed 40 names of people probably living in Holborn during Dickens’ residence there. A few other Dickon’s names have hern traced to Kent, where the novel i t spent his earliest years, and Pick wick, as is well known, is a name Dickens’ found in :Bath and treasured u] for later use. The origin of such names as ‘Micawher,” “Chuzzlewit,” and “Copperfield” remain obscure. No methodical search of the parish

files ever has been undertaken in llolborn, but now that i* is revealed that Jones is so plainly on the rigid track, it is probable that such a search will be made. The novels which contain most of the Holborn names so far are "Pickwick Papers, ‘‘Bleak Hue,” David Copperfield,” and “Ou> Mu tual Friend ” These are doubtless names which Dickens, in his meanderings, . iw on shops, gates, and hmi -es.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY DODGED DEPRESSION McALLEN, Tex. (UP)—The depression has made little headway in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Money is so plentiful a recent issue of noninterest bearing bonds was sold in record time. The McAllen Lions Club floated (lie issue, and the money was used for a children’s municipal playground. The bonds will mature in three years. Many of the “investors” have indicated they will not cash them.
