Uncle Sam has a way of finding out things hut he takes no action until he is .‘ure he L- light. Most of the men who descended orv Washington several week* ago ^e^ing congress to enact legislat. nr.-Lhad would give them their lionu money immediately, had leturned to their homes. Congress adjourned and the veterans did not get their bonus hut they were given railroad fare by the government ami all but the group first mentioned left the District of Columbia quietly. After they had ‘‘worn out their welcome” and refused to leave, the treasury department decided it was time to act. Requests were unheeded by the stubborn hundreds “squatting” in government property almost in the shadow of the rapitol dome. Police had kept the group orderly but they simply refused to evacuate. Trouble flared when trea-ury agents, accompanied by policemen, issued an ultimatum to the remnants of the bonus army that they had to go. In the melee which resulted, police were forced to fire a few shots to show the veterans that they at last meant business after attempts at jieaceful arbitration had failed. Unfortunately. one so-called “veteran” was killed and two others wounded. This*g'avp the communists and criminals in the grouo a chance to fan the flames of hysteria and start a riot. The war department was informed of the situation and United States regulars were called out. Then eviction of the bonus armv was completed •is only American soldiers can do a job. The “squatters” were forced out of their camps and starter! on the trek hack home. This, we hope, concludes the final chapter of the visit of the first bonus army to Washington, and at last all’s quiet oh the Potomac front.
